Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I close my eyes for a moment, focusing on the dark energies emanating from the gate's runes. I can feel them pulsing in rhythm with some ancient heartbeat. There is power here, yes—dark power—but it is dormant unless roused. I open my eyes, their red glow intensifying as I lock onto the sigils.

Varrika, stand back. Merrin, put those picks away for now—they won't work on magic this old and strong. My gaze shifts to Seraphine. Wise counsel, wizard. This gate was crafted not just to keep out intruders but to guard something within. The runes are a test of will and knowledge. I extend my hand, palm flat against the cold stone beside one of the pulsing sigils. My fingertips begin to glow with a dark purple light that matches the runes. I can read these if you grant me silence and space. But know this—if we trigger something, it won't be because we forced our way in like common thieves. The air around us grows colder as I begin to channel my own arcane power, probing gently at the gate's defenses.

<Assistant's Response>

I crouch down, peering at the pulsing runes with a mix of awe and trepidation. "By the gods," I mutter, "these are no ordinary sigils. They're practically writhing with dark power." My fingers itch to trace their intricate patterns, but I resist the urge. Instead, I pull out my trusty set of lockpicks, examining the gate's mechanism with a critical eye.

Seraphine's warning gives me pause. "Easy for you to say, Seraphine," I call back over my shoulder, "but we need to get in there if we're going to find that sword. And I'd rather not be turned into a pile of ash while trying."

I turn to Jeane, eyebrow raised. "Barrier or not, it's keeping us out. And I'm guessing the only way through is to figure out what these runes mean." I glance at Halie and Varrika, "Any of you lot have any experience with ancient wards? I could use a hand here."

I turn back to the gate, my brow furrowed in concentration as I try to make sense of the pulsing runes. The air around them seems to crackle with energy, raising the fine hairs on my arms. I can feel the weight of Seraphine's gaze on my back, but I push down the fear that threatens to overwhelm me. This is what I do. Breaking locks, bypassing wards... it's all in a day's work for a rogue like me.

I select a thin, curved pick and insert it into the keyhole, working it gently as I try to feel out the tumblers within. The lock is old, but it seems sturdy enough. With any luck, I can have this open in a matter of minutes...

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I squint at the runes, tracing their complex patterns with my gaze, feeling a deep sense of unease settle in my bones. "Jeane, what do you mean 'dormant'? This magic feels anything but." My voice is low, tight with apprehension as I take a small step back, putting more distance between myself and the ominous portal. The air around the gate crackles with an energy that makes my skin prickle, a primal warning system screaming at me to run. Yet, we have come too far, risked too much, to turn back now.
My eyes dart to the others, assessing their reactions. Merrin seems enthralled, her fingers twitching as if fighting the urge to touch the pulsing sigils. Varrika stands solid and stoic, but I can see the tension in her shoulders, a silent acknowledgment of the danger we face. Halie has her holy symbol clutched tightly to her chest, her lips moving in silent prayer.
"I need more time with these runes,"
I say, my tone firm despite the tremor running through me. I kneel before the gate, laying out my arcane tools—a small brass compass, a crystal sphere, and an ornate quill—on the ground beside me. The runes seem to throb in rhythm with my own hammering heart. "We cannot risk blundering into whatever trap this is meant to be."
With a deep breath, I begin to work, carefully sketching the runes onto a clean sheet of parchment using the quill. Each one I copy seems to pulse with greater intensity, but I push through the fear, my scholar's mind taking over. "Merrin, keep watch," I command without looking up, my focus entirely on the task at hand. The fate of our quest, and perhaps our lives, hangs in the balance of what these runes reveal.*
