Round 4 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

I trace the shifting patterns with a finger, careful not to touch the stone itself. The magic here is old—older than the woods around us—and angry. It smells of sulfur and ash, like a forgotten firepit stirred after centuries. This binding isn't just protective. It's hostile.
The runes twist under my gaze, their edges sharpening as I focus. I can feel them testing me already, searching for weaknesses in my spellcasting. They're alive in the way that only things designed to kill remain alive.
Halie's right about the danger. But she's also a healer—not a breaker of curses or unmaker of bindings. That work requires... specialization. I step forward into the gap between Seraphine and Varrika, deliberately placing myself as the point of authority. Ladies—and Merrin—I appreciate your input. My voice carries a tone that makes it clear appreciation is not the same as deference.
But this isn't a puzzle for clever hands or a problem for holy prayer. This is dark magic crafted to recognize and destroy precisely our kinds—sorcerers and wizards who might try to unweave it. The runes pulse again, their darkness seeming to deepen at my words. I didn't come here to play semantics with an angry stone door. I came to retrieve what's ours. I draw upon the magic within me, feeling it coil like smoke in my veins—different from the ancient power in the gate but related somehow, like predator and prey that share bloodlines. This binding responds to intent as much as action. It wants us to fail, to break against it. So we won't break against it at all. With a swift, precise gesture, I begin weaving a spell of my own—silver threads of counter-magic designed not to force the gate open, but to slip through its keyholes and unlock it from within.
Watch closely. This may be... instructive for some of you who haven't dealt with magic that bites back. The runes on the gate scream as my spell penetrates them—not a sound anyone else can hear, perhaps, but I feel it like teeth scraping bone.
I chew my lower lip, eyes darting between the pulsing runes and the faces of my companions. The tension is thick enough to cut with a dagger, and I feel the weight of our collective fate pressing down on my shoulders like a yoke.
Alright, here's what we're gonna do. I point to Varrika. You stand ready with that hammer of yours. If anything comes bursting outta them runes, you clobber it good and proper. I turn to Halie, my voice dropping to a low murmur. And you, keep those holy words handy. Might need 'em to chase the darkness back to whatever hole it crawled outta. Finally, I meet Seraphine's gaze, holding it steady. You're our key here. Whatever magic this gate's got, you're gonna be the one to unravel it. I'll get us in, but you gotta be ready to grab the reins as soon as we're past these wards. With that, I step forward, my hand hovering over the lock. The runes writhe beneath my touch, and I feel a shiver crawl up my spine. Time to dance with danger, ladies. I mutter, more to myself than anyone else.
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what comes next. Then, with a flick of my wrist, I send my picks sliding into the lock, feeling for the sweet spot where metal meets metal. As the tumblers start to shift, I hold my breath, every nerve alight with anticipation.
I step back from the gate, my expression grave as I turn to face the others, my voice dropping to a low murmur. "This is no ordinary magical barrier. The runes are not just a lock; they're prison bars. And whatever power they hold is ancient and malevolent." My gaze sweeps across them, settling on Jeane. "Your assessment is correct - this binding isn't just protective, it's hostile. We cannot simply pick this lock or force our way through. To break these runes would be to unleash something far worse than whatever skeletons guard the tower."
I reach into my robes, my fingers brushing against a small, leather-bound tome tucked away there - one of the few texts I own on the history of arcane prisons. "There may be another way. A ritual, ancient and dangerous, that could unravel these bindings without releasing their power." My eyes meet Varrika's, then move to Halie. "But it will require immense concentration, powerful magic, and a significant sacrifice from us all. Are we ready to commit to such a path?"
