Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I step forward, my gaze sweeping across the runes with the cold precision of someone who has seen their like before. These are prison bars, not locks for thieves. My wings rustle softly beneath my cloak as I circle the gate, feeling the pressure of the dark magic against my skin.

Halie—stand back. Merrin, don't touch those tumblers yet. The mechanism is likely warded. I trace one rune with a gloved finger, my expression unreadable. This isn't mere deterrent magic. It's a trap designed to... My eyes narrow as I recognize the pattern. This is binding runes. If you trigger it wrong, we'll all be pulled inside and sealed away. I straighten, pulling a small velvet pouch from within my robes. We need to draw power from something external—something they don't control. I sprinkle a mix of crushed bone dust and iridescent powder across the gate's surface. Seraphine, light a torch and hold it close to that section there. The flame will reveal the true pathway. As the powder glows with a soft, otherworldly light along one particular seam in the stone, I draw my silver dagger. Varrika, be ready to break through once I've cut the binding spell. This will... I press the blade to the glowing line, and arcane energy crackles around us. ...take all of us working together. My voice is calm, but there's an edge to it—a demon's patience wearing thin with mortal slowness.

Now—on my mark.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I step between Merrin's curious fingers and the lock mechanism, pressing my palm against the stone. Stop. My voice is firm but not sharp—measured conviction, not anger. Everyone back away two steps. These runes aren't just a challenge; they're alive. The dark energy pulses against my skin like a physical weight. Jeane, I need you to cast a barrier around us—not for attack, for defense. The air is saturated with corruption.*

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I take a step back from the ominous gate, my eyes still fixed on the writhing runes. Halie's right, these wards aren't playing around. My fingers twitch towards my lockpicks, but I resist the urge. Instead, I draw out the map of the tower's ground floor, smoothing it against my thigh. If we're walking into a sorcerer's den, we need to know what we're up against. I glance at Seraphine, hope clear in my eyes. Any chance you can get a better look at those runes without setting them off? We might be able to trace their pattern if we know where they lead. My gaze flicks to Varrika, a hint of a smile on my face. And maybe our resident dwarf can see if there's any stonework we can use to our advantage.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I approach the gate, my eyes narrowing as I study the complex patterns woven into the ancient stone. The runes are indeed alive, their power humming like a thousand angry wasps trapped behind glass. I raise a hand, palm out, feeling the dark energy push back against my own magical signature. This is no mere locking spell. It's a ward of binding, designed to hold something - or someone - inside. A chill traces its way down my spine as I think about what kind of creature would require such extreme containment measures. Halie's right; we need caution here. A simple lockpick won't be enough.
I turn back to Jeane, her expression one of grim determination under her wings. "These aren't just defenses," I say, my voice a low murmur so it doesn't carry through the oppressive silence of the woods. "They're prisons. We need more than brute force to break through this. Perhaps... a spell of counter-enchantment? To weaken the ward's grip?"
I pull out my spellbook, flipping through the pages until I find the right incantation. The words are complex, and I'll need to focus all my mental energy to cast it successfully. "Everyone, stand clear. This could be... unstable." My fingers tremble slightly as I trace the runes on the page, committing them to memory. The power within this tower is immense, and I am but a small spark before its inferno. But if we are to retrieve the Time-Splitting Sword, we have no choice but to light the match.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I step to the fore, my heavy boots echoing off the ancient stones. Enough prattling. If we're to crack this nut, let's do it proper-like. My eyes rake across the gate's surface, taking in the shifting runes and pulsing darkness. Merrin, stand ready with those lockpicks of yours. Halie, you got any holy words that might put paid to these foul sigils? I raise my mace, its head heavy in my scarred hands. Seraphine, watch the wizard's back. We'll need your spells if this goes sideways.
