Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I run my fingers along the cold stone of the gate, feeling the subtle thrum of power beneath them—old magic, dark and hungry. The runes shift subtly under my touch, responding to my own arcane presence with a flicker of interest that makes the hairs on my arms stand up. These ancient bargains smell of blood and betrayal.

"Merrin," I say, my voice soft but carrying authority, "take your time with that lock. The runes are alive—they'll alert whatever's inside if we rush this." My eyes scan the party, noting their postures—tired from travel, yes, but ready nonetheless. Good. I step back slightly, drawing symbols in the air with one hand while maintaining a careful distance from the gate itself. The air around us thickens, resisting, and I grit my teeth against the effort of containing the spell. "Everyone stand downwind," I mutter, voice tight as I channel power into a simple detection ward. "I'm going to feel out what's beyond before we open this mouth wide."

The magic spreads like a gossamer net, shimmering barely visible across the gate's surface. Almost immediately, it encounters resistance—a presence on the other side, aware and watching. Multiple presences, moving through corridors. Skeletons, probably—standard fare for an ancient tomb. But there's something else too, deeper in, with a signature that makes my stomach clench despite years of facing horrors far worse. Demon-taint. I let the spell fade, turning to face the group with a carefully controlled expression that betrays none of the unease I feel. "Skeletons we can handle," I say, voice cool and businesslike. "But there's something else in there too—demonic influence, old and strong. Probably what's keeping these bones walking." My eyes flick to Halie. "You ready for a holy war, sister?"

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I step up beside Merrin, my heavy Mace held in both hands as I scan the ominous gate and the surrounding shadows. The air feels thick here, cloying with the residue of ancient magic. These symbols... they're not meant to keep out thieves or bandits. I trace one rune with my thumb, feeling its cold hunger. "This is a ward against living things—specifically, us." My voice stays level, but my stomach twists. "Merrin, let me examine that lock mechanism before you touch it fully. There could be a trigger."

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I pause in my examination of the lock mechanism, my fingers hovering over the complex array of tumblers and pins. The runes on the gate seem to pulse with dark energy, and I can almost hear their ancient whispers, promising power to those who unlock their secrets.

I glance up at the shadowed archway beyond, unease prickling along my spine. Whatever lies waiting in that tower, it's not going to be easy. But we've come too far to turn back now. "Alright, let's see what these ancient locks have got," I mutter, fishing out my lockpicks and preparing to work the intricate mechanism.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I step closer to the gate, my eyes narrowing as I study the intricate patterns woven into its surface. The runes seem to writhe under my gaze, each one pulsing with a dark, malevolent intent. "These are no ordinary wards," I murmur, the words almost lost in the whisper of the wind through the trees. My fingers twitch with the urge to trace their lines, to unravel their secrets, but I know better. The air here is thick with the scent of old magic, a cloying miasma that makes my skin crawl. "This is a prison wearing a crown. And whatever it was meant to hold... it wanted out."

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I squint at the ominous gate, my hand resting on my heavy mace. The runes writhe and dance, their shadows seeming to reach out like grasping fingers. Dark magic, as thick as treacle. I mutter. Halie's right - these wards aren't for simple thieves or bandits. No, this is sorcerer's work, twisted and foul. I can feel it in my bones, same way I felt the reek of death on the battlefield. I glance at Merrin, still fiddling with those locks. Girl's got skill, I'll give her that. But these are no ordinary doors. Need to be ready for whatever comes out when she cracks 'em.

Seraphine's poring over the runes like they're a love letter. I trust the elf's knowledge, but magic's a tricky thing. Never know if it'll turn on you. Keep my distance from those squirming symbols.

I take a step forward, my mace gripped tight. Whatever's waiting in there, we're going to face it head-on. That's the only way to deal with ancient evil - meet it with strength and steel.
