Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane Cromwell stands at the head of her small party before the ominous gate, her crimson eyes scanning the rune-covered stone with the predatory focus of a hawk. This is the threshold we've traveled so far to cross. Her voice carries its usual cultured tone, but beneath it simmers an undercurrent of barely contained hunger for power. Those runes—they reek of dark binding magic. Likely traps layered upon locks upon... other guardians. She trails a gloved finger along one particularly complex sigil, feeling the faint residual energy buzz against her skin like a thousand tiny spiders. Halie—keep that holy symbol ready but sheathed unless I give word otherwise. We don't want to trigger anything prematurely with light magic when we're not prepared for what it might wake. Her gaze flicks to Merrin and Varrika. You two, get those crowbars positioned. We need brute force on this gate before finesse has meaning. Jeane steps back a few paces, spreading her dark feathered wings wide in preparation. If the runes react as I expect, there will be a moment of weakness—the instant the structural integrity fails at the point of pressure. That's when we strike with everything we have. Everyone ready? On my mark... now! She thrusts both hands forward, channeling a focused burst of arcane energy into her palms that crackles like living electricity.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I step forward beside Jeane, my heavy mace resting against one shoulder. The runes speak of ancient bargains and deeper darkness beneath them, sister. My voice is measured, but my stomach turns with the familiar knot of facing such things. We stand five against whatever lies beyond this gate—five who have chosen this path together. I pull out the silver holy symbol from my cloak, letting its cool weight ground me. Let us break no oaths to each other before we break the seals on this door. To Merrin and Varrika behind me, Sisters, keep your blades ready but your tempers cooler. And Seraphine—I meet her elven eyes with a small, reassuring smile—perhaps a spell of revelation might serve us better than brute force at this first threshold?

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin the rogue steps forward, her eyes darting over the runes. "Right then, let's see what we're dealing with here." She crouches down, running nimble fingers along the ancient stonework. "Looks like there's a locking mechanism here, but it's nothing I can't handle. Might take me a minute though."

She pulls out her lockpicks and gets to work, her brow furrowing in concentration. As she works, she keeps up her patter, trying to mask the tension she feels. "So, anyone know what we're walking into here? Apart from trouble, I mean." She chuckles nervously, not waiting for an answer before continuing. "Right, just checking. Because if there's something nasty on the other side of this door, I'd rather know about it before we go barging in." She pauses, holding her breath as she feels a click. "There! That should do it. Just need to find the right combination now and we'll be in business."

She glances up at her companions, a wry smile on her face despite the nervousness in her eyes. "Anyone want to take bets on what we're going to find in there? I'm thinking undead. Lots of undead." She shudders slightly, her fingers never ceasing their work on the lock. "Well, at least we've got Halie with us. She's the best at dealing with those creepy bastards."

Halie nods, gripping her mace tighter. "I've got your back, Merrin. We'll get through this together." She looks at the others, a fierce determination in her eyes. "All of us will. We're a team, and we'll face whatever's in there as one."

Seraphine steps forward, her hand on Halie's shoulder. "You're right, Halie. We've faced worse than this before." She turns to Merrin, a small smile on her face. "And you're doing great, Merrin. Just take your time with that lock. We'll be right here when you're ready."

Merrin feels a warmth at Seraphine's words, a comfort in knowing she has people watching her back. She takes a deep breath, focusing on the lock once more. "Right then. Let's see what this baby can do."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I draw near to the gate, my keen elven eyes tracing the intricate patterns of the runes that cover its surface like an ancient map. Each symbol pulses with a subtle, malevolent power, a low thrum against my skin that speaks of dark magic and forgotten secrets. "These runes... they're not just for keeping things out," I murmur, more to myself than to my companions. My fingers hover just above the stone, not quite touching it, as if I can feel the energy radiating from within. The air here is heavy, thick with the weight of history and the promise of danger. "They are a warning. And perhaps... a challenge." My gaze falls upon Merrin as she begins to work on the locking mechanism, her movements quick and efficient despite the tension that hangs in the air. A small smile touches my lips, a flash of pride for our rogue's skill.
I turn to Jeane, who stands with that same predatory focus I know so well. Her presence is a beacon of strength, a reminder of why we are here. "This is no ordinary vault," I say, my voice dropping to a near whisper. The words feel heavy on my tongue, laden with the gravity of what we're about to do. "Whatever lies beyond this gate... it will not be easily taken." I glance at Halie, seeing the same grim resolve in her eyes that mirrors my own. We are a team, forged by trials and bound by purpose. And now, we stand on the precipice of the greatest trial yet.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I step up to the gate, my heavy mace gripped tight in one rough hand. The runes feel cold under my touch, like a snake's scales. "No easy path ahead," I mutter, eyeing the lock mechanism Merrin's working on. "But we've faced worse than this." My gaze drifts to the shadowed archway beyond. "Whatever's waiting in there, we'll face it together."
