Round 198 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Varrika says, "We can't stay here," the passageway collapses further, sending a wave of dust and debris swirling around them. The air is thick with the smell of ozone and damp earth. A loud crack echoes through the tunnel as a section of wall gives way, revealing a narrow crevice that stretches out into darkness. The ground beneath their feet shudders violently, and Varrika's eyes widen in alarm.
Merrin's eyes strain to pierce the swirling dust, her heart leaping into her throat at the sound of crumbling stone. When the narrow crevice appears in the collapsing wall, she doesn't hesitate. "Varrika, this way!" She lunges for the opening, her hands scrabbling for purchase on the jagged edges. "It's our only chance!"
With a grunt of effort, Merrin hauls herself into the crevice, not daring to look back as the tunnel collapses behind her. The space is cramped and claustrophobic, but it might just be stable enough to ride out the worst of the collapse. She wriggles backwards, extending a hand to Varrika. "Come on, push! We need to get clear before the whole damn thing comes down!"
Her breath comes in ragged gasps as she strains to pull Varrika to safety, the fighter's weight heavy against her arms. But Merrin doesn't let up, fueled by desperation and sheer adrenaline. "That's it," she grunts through clenched teeth. "Just a little further..."
I reach for Merrin's outstretched hand, my fingers scraping against the jagged edges of the crevice as I haul myself up and into the narrow space. The air is thick with dust and the sound of crumbling stone, and I can feel the weight of the tunnel collapsing behind me, pressing down like a physical weight on my back. "Pull!" I grunt, throwing my whole body weight into the effort of hauling myself up after Merrin. My muscles scream in protest as I heave myself forward, inch by painful inch, until finally I collapse into the crevice beside her, chest heaving with exertion. For a moment we simply lie there, gasping for breath as the sound of the tunnel collapsing fades into a distant rumble. Then Merrin turns to me, her eyes wide and wild in the darkness. "We made it," she breathes, more statement than question. "We're alive."
I nod grimly, pushing myself up onto my elbows to survey our surroundings. The crevice is narrow and cramped, barely wide enough for us to lie side by side. But it seems to be holding steady against the tremors, at least for now. "How much further do you think it goes?" I ask, my voice rough with dust and adrenaline. "Could be our only way out of this nightmare."
