The air in the narrow passageway shimmered with ancient magic as Merrin and Varrika found themselves staring at pulsating runes etched into the stone walls. The ground beneath their feet trembled ominously, and the sound of rushing water grew louder still. "By the gods," Merrin muttered, her crossbow trained on the darkness ahead while her free hand gripped a torch tightly. "This place feels wrong—like we've stumbled into something we shouldn't have." Varrika, her scarred face illuminated by the eerie blue glow from the runes, nodded grimly. "I can feel it too," she rumbled. "Something old and powerful sleeping here. We need to be careful." The dwarf woman took a tentative step forward, her heavy mace at the ready, when suddenly the ground heaved violently. A section of the wall slid open with a grating screech, revealing a dark passage beyond. The air that flowed out was thick and damp, carrying with it faint whispering sounds—a chorus of voices beckoning them deeper into the unknown. Merrin's fingers twitched with rogue instinct screaming at her to investigate while rational mind urged caution. She glanced at Varrika, seeking guidance from the dwarf woman whose presence had become as familiar and comforting as her own shadow. Varrika met Merrin's gaze, expression grim but determined. "We need to know what's in there," she said softly over rushing water. "But we go in ready for anything." She stepped toward the passage, mace raised, gesturing for Merrin to follow. Merrin nodded and raised her crossbow as they entered the narrow corridor lined with shifting symbols. The air grew colder as they moved deeper into the liquid-powered passageways beneath the ancient complex. Suddenly, a massive stone slab slammed down behind them with a thunderous boom, sealing off their only escape route. Both women spun around, hearts pounding, as the ground began to shake more violently than before. The runes on the walls pulsed faster now, casting insane patterns of light and shadow that seemed to dance across Merrin's and Varrika's terrified faces.
