Phase: escalating

The cavern air grew thick and damp as the sound of rushing water intensified. The ground beneath their feet trembled again, more violently this time, and a section of wall slid open with a grating sound to reveal a narrow passageway leading deeper into darkness. The air from within carried faint whispering sounds—a chorus of voices just beyond hearing—that seemed to beckon them closer.
Merrin's fingers twitched with rogue instinct screaming at her to investigate while rational mind urged caution. She glanced at Varrika, seeking guidance from the dwarf woman whose presence had become as familiar and comforting as her own shadow.
Varrika met Merrin's gaze, expression grim but determined. "We need to know what's in there," she said softly over rushing water. "But we go in ready for anything." She stepped toward the passage, mace raised, gesturing for Merrin to follow.
Merrin nodded and raised her crossbow as they entered the narrow corridor lined with shifting symbols. The air grew colder as they moved deeper into the liquid-powered passageways beneath the ancient complex. Suddenly, the corridor opened into a vast chamber illuminated by blue glowing water emanating from a central pool—figures moved within its depths.
Varrika stepped forward, mace raised. "Stay close," she murmured over rushing water. "And be ready for anything." Merrin nodded, crossbow trained on the pool as they moved closer to its heart—they had never encountered magic quite like this before.
