Phase: escalating

The platform lurched again, sending a fresh wave of terror through Varrika's gut. She'd been in tight spots before—battles, dungeons, monster encounters—but this felt different. Worse. The ground beneath her feet was literally trying to kill them now, and there was no visible way out.
Merrin stumbled against her side, their face pale even under the strange ethereal glow that seemed to emanate from their very skin lately. "Varrika!" they gasped, grabbing onto her arm with both hands. Their eyes were wide with fear, but there was something else too—excitement? Curiosity?
"What is this place?" Merrin asked, looking around at the shifting crystal formations that made up the platform and the endless abyss beyond. "And why is it trying to throw us off?"
Varrika pried Merrin's fingers off her arm gently but firmly. "I don't know," she growled, scanning the area for any sign of an escape route or solid ground. "But I do know we need to find a way down before this thing decides to shake itself apart completely."
The platform groaned ominously, as if in response to her words. A fresh crack appeared near the edge, sending more crystal fragments tumbling into the void below. Merrin yelped and stumbled backward, nearly losing their balance again.
"Careful!" Varrika barked, reaching out to steady them with a hand on their shoulder. The ethereal glow seemed to intensify where her fingers touched, and she jerked back instinctively. "What the hell is that light?"
Merrin looked down at themselves, then back up at Varrika with an expression caught between confusion and amusement. "I've been meaning to ask about that," they said, holding their arms out and examining the faint blue glow that seemed to emanate from their skin in pulses. "It started after we... merged. Or whatever happened with the book."
Varrika eyed the glowing Merrin warily, her hand moving to rest on the hilt of her mace. "Great," she muttered. "Not only are we trapped on a death-trap platform, but one of us is also emitting mysterious magical light. What else could possibly go wrong?"
As if in answer, the air around them began to shimmer and distort, like heat waves visible only when magic was involved. Merrin's eyes widened. "Varrika," they said slowly, their voice tight with tension, "I think something's coming."
