The ancient stone walls of the hidden chamber seemed to pulse with an otherworldly energy, their surfaces alive with shifting patterns of light and shadow. Merrin clutched the Book tightly against her chest, its power thrumming in sync with her racing heartbeat. Varrika stood beside her, her scarred face set in a grim mask of concentration as she scanned their surroundings for any sign of escape or danger.
"Less than ideal," the dwarf growled under her breath, her hand instinctively moving to the hilt of her heavy mace. "What manner of sorcery is this, Merrin? The walls themselves seem alive." Merrin opened her mouth to respond, but before she could speak, the book gave another insistent pulse of power.
The air shimmered around them, and suddenly the chamber seemed to shift and change. A massive mirror appeared in the center of the room, its surface dark and impenetrable. But as Varrika took a tentative step forward, the glass began to crack and splinter, shards falling away to reveal...
A figure stood within the frame, twisted and distorted beyond recognition. Its eyes burned with an unnatural light, fixed upon them both with an intensity that sent a chill down Merrin's spine. The Book pulsed again in her arms, its power responding to the presence before them.
"What is this?" Varrika hissed, her hand tightening on her mace. "Some manner of guardian?"
Merrin swallowed hard, her eyes never leaving the figure in the mirror. "I don't know," she whispered. "But I have a feeling we're about to find out."
