As Varrika takes another step forward, her mace gleams in the pulsing light, casting eerie shadows on the walls. The runes on the walls pulse faster, brighter, and the humming noise grows louder, a constant, maddening murmur just at the edge of comprehension. Serrine's face contorts in pain as she clutches at her head, her eyes rolling back in her head. The air hums with ancient power, and Varrika's frozen stance seems to be drawing Merrin closer, despite her initial warning. Suddenly, Varrika's mace blazes with an intense light, illuminating the dark passageway and casting a halo around Serrine. The runes on the walls pulse in time with the light, and the humming noise reaches a fever pitch. Serrine's body begins to convulse, and she gasps out a single word: "No..."

My heart pounds as I spin around at Varrika's warning, my eyes straining to pierce the shadows of the passageway behind me. But all I can see is the pulsing glow of the rune-carved walls, casting eerie light across the ancient stones. "Varrika, what do you see?" I ask, my voice tight with fear. But Varrika doesn't respond, her eyes still fixed on something in the darkness. And then I hear it - a low, ominous chuckle that seems to emanate from the very shadows themselves. My skin crawls as an icy tendril of fear snakes its way down my spine. Whatever lurks in those shadows... it's not natural. I take a hesitant step towards Varrika, my hand tightening on the hilt of my mace. The pulsing runes on the walls seem to draw me closer, their light growing brighter with each passing moment. Seraphine's pained gasp draws my attention, and I see her leaning against the wall, clutching at her head. "Serrine!" I call out, taking a step towards her. "What's wrong?"

But even as I do, I feel the strange energy in the air growing stronger, the runes on the walls pulsing faster, brighter. And from the shadows behind me... the chuckle grows louder, more insistent. Whatever this is, whatever test we must face... I know we're in for a fight. I raise my mace higher, ready to strike at the first sign of danger. But something feels off. The figure Varrika sees... it doesn't make sense. There's nothing there. And yet, the fear in my heart won't dissipate. The air hums with ancient power, and I can feel the weight of the rune-carved walls pressing down on us. Varrika's mace gleams in the pulsing light, its head heavy and well-balanced in her hands. She takes a deep breath, steeling herself for whatever may come. "We've come too far to turn back now," she says, her voice a low rumble. "And I'll be damned if I let some shadow-creature pick us off one by one."

I nod grimly, my grip tightening on my mace. Whatever this is, whatever sacrifice we must make... I will face it head-on. As a warrior should.
