Phase: escalating

The chamber's air crackles with energy as the symbols ignite in a swirling vortex of blue fire. Merrin presses herself against the wall, her heart pounding in her chest as she watches Serrine approach the ancient runes with a mixture of curiosity and barely contained fear. The wizard's fingers trace the air above the symbols without touching, her face etched with exhaustion but her eyes burning with that familiar mix of determination and barely contained terror.
"Merrin," she says softly, not looking away from the glowing characters, "what do you see? Any patterns? Hidden meanings?" The halfling squints at the moving symbols, trying to make sense of their shifting forms. "They're... shifting. Like they're trying to form words or..." She swallows hard. "...a message." The thought sends a shiver down her spine. Serrine nods slowly, her expression grim as she turns back to the runes. "A message demanding payment," she mutters darkly. "Our worthiness for the sword... at the cost of our own memories."
The symbols pulse faster now, their light intensifying until the entire chamber is bathed in a ghostly blue glow. Merrin feels a wave of dizziness wash over her, and she clutches at the wall for support as the world seems to tilt around her. Serrine, meanwhile, staggers back a step, her face contorted with concentration as she reaches out with her own magic to try and decipher the runes' meaning.
Suddenly, the air crackles with energy, and a voice echoes through the chamber, seeming to come from everywhere and nowhere at once. "Speak your names, seekers of the Time-Splitting Sword," it intones, the words reverberating through Merrin's very bones. "Declare your purpose here, and face the price of your ambition."
Serrine turns to Merrin, her eyes wide with both excitement and fear. "This is it," she breathes, her voice barely audible over the pulsing of the symbols. "The test of worthiness. We must speak our names and declare our purpose..." She trails off, her gaze fixed on the runes as they continue to shift and change. "...but at a terrible cost."
