Round 54

Phase: escalating

The heavy stone door groaned open, revealing a chamber beyond that was even darker and more foreboding than the one they'd just left behind. Serrine staggered forward, her hands trembling as she tried to maintain her balance. The blue light from the counter-seal began to fade, and the ground shook violently beneath their feet.
Suddenly, the seal shuddered and collapsed, its fragments crashing to the floor with a deafening roar. The sound sent a chill down Merrin's spine, and she quickly helped Serrine to stand. Varrika's eyes scanned the darkness for any sign of movement, her crossbow still strung and loaded.
I help Serrine to her feet, my heart pounding in my chest as I survey the damage around us. The seal has collapsed, leaving only fragments of broken stone and the faint glow of fading magic. Varrika's eyes scan the darkness, her crossbow at the ready, but there's no sign of any immediate threat.
I glance over at Merrin, who's already moving to check on Serrine's condition. The wizard looks shaken but unharmed physically, though the magical backlash clearly took a toll. I need to know if she can still fight or if we need to prioritize her recovery.
Serrine staggers, her robes hanging in tatters around her shoulders. "I... I don't know what happened," she gasps out, her voice hoarse with exhaustion. "The seal... it was drawing power from something ancient and terrible. When it broke..."
Varrika steps closer, her voice low and urgent. "What do you mean? What kind of power?"
Serrine's eyes widen as she looks up at the two women supporting her. "I think... I think we just unleashed something. Something that was meant to stay sealed away." Her gaze shifts to the darkness beyond the door, and a shiver runs down her spine.
Merrin's voice is tight with tension as she speaks. "We need to move. Now. Before whatever was in that seal decides to say hello."
I nod in agreement, my grip on Serrine tightening slightly as I help her forward. The darkness beyond the door seems to press in around us, thick and heavy with an ancient malevolence that raises the hairs on the back of my neck.
The chamber beyond is even more cavernous than the one they'd just left, the walls stretching outward into an endless expanse of darkness. The air crackles with a strange, arcane energy that makes Serrine's skin tingle and her hair stand on end.
