Round 18 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Halie's stabilization spell wavers, and the pit walls shudder as the pressure plates beneath Merrin's body trigger a hidden mechanism. The ground gives way, and a section of the wall slides open, revealing a narrow tunnel that descends deep into the earth. Merrin's eyes flutter open, and she groans, her head spinning from the fall. The skeletons pause their advance, their empty sockets fixed on the newly revealed tunnel as if sensing an opportunity to trap the party further. Jeane's fireball spell casts flickering shadows on the walls as she peers into the tunnel, her eyes scanning for any signs of danger.
Jeane: As I descend into the pit, my fireball spell casting flickering shadows on the slick stone walls, I scan every inch of the area for signs of magical traps or hidden dangers. The air down here is thick with ancient power—wrong in a way that makes my skin crawl. I call up to Halie, Keep that stabilization spell going as long as you can, but don't push yourself too far—that magic feels unstable. My crimson eyes fix on Merrin's prone form at the bottom of the pit. She's alive... barely. We need to get her out of here before whatever triggered this trap decides to finish the job. I crouch beside Merrin, one hand hovering over her body as I feel for any immediate magical threats or curses clinging to her.
The sound of shifting stone draws my attention to the newly revealed tunnel. Well, shit. Of course there's a hidden passage leading down into darkness—because why wouldn't this cursed tower have more secrets? I peer into the gloom, my wings rustling softly as I maintain my balance on the uneven floor. Any sane person would call this a clear sign to leave and come back with proper preparation... but we don't have that luxury, do we? My gaze flicks between Merrin's unconscious form and the yawning darkness of the tunnel. We need to make a decision fast—either extract Merrin now and hope Halie can keep stabilizing the pit long enough, or investigate this passage before whatever's down there comes up here. I run through our options mentally, weighing risk against potential reward.
If we go down, we're walking into a situation we're not prepared for—no support from above, trapped in narrow tunnels with who knows what waiting below. But leaving Merrin here feels like abandoning one of our own to whatever horrors this place has in store. My hand tightens around my mace as I consider the possibilities.
After a moment's deliberation, I make my decision. Seraphine, stay up there and keep that teleportation spell ready—we may need to evacuate quickly if things go sideways. Varrika, cover our retreat with that crossbow of yours. Halie, maintain the stabilization as long as you can. I turn to face the tunnel, my expression grim but determined. I'm going down there to scout ahead. If I don't return within five minutes, assume the worst and leave without me. With a final glance at Merrin's unconscious form, I step into the darkness of the tunnel, my fireball spell illuminating the rough-hewn stone walls as I descend deeper into the heart of the cursed tower.
I maintain the stabilization spell with every ounce of willpower I can muster, sweat beading on my forehead as the ancient magic pushes back against my efforts. The runes pulse faster now, their malevolent light growing brighter by the second—whatever forces are at work here don't like being contained. "Jeane!" I call down into the darkness, my voice tight with urgency. "The wards are weakening—I can't hold this much longer! We need to move Merrin NOW before this whole section collapses!"
I try to keep my breathing steady as I maintain the spell, but fear grips me like a physical weight. The air grows colder still, and I swear I can hear whispers in that chilled wind—the sound of ancient voices calling out in a language that makes my teeth ache just to listen to it. This is wrong—everything about this situation screams danger at every level. We should never have come here, never have touched these wards. But Merrin lies trapped below, and abandoning her isn't an option. I redouble my efforts on the stabilization spell, drawing on every reserve of divine energy I possess. The holy symbol on my necklace flares with a brilliant light that almost seems to push back against the dark runes for a moment before wavering. "Varrika!" I shout over my shoulder, still not daring to take my eyes off the pulsing walls of the pit. "If this gives out completely, grab Merrin and RUN! Don't wait—I mean it!"
I can feel the magic tearing at the edges of my control, each pulse of those damnable runes sapping more of my strength. My vision begins to swim, dark spots dancing before my eyes as I struggle to maintain concentration. "Jeane!" I call again, desperation creeping into my voice. "Whatever you're doing down there—HURRY!"
This spell won't hold much longer—I'm pushing beyond my limits already. The cold seeped deep into my bones now, and every muscle trembles with exertion as I pour everything I have into keeping this pit from collapsing completely. "Seraphine!" I manage to gasp out between clenched teeth. "If... if something happens to me—"
But I don't finish the sentence—I can't even complete the thought. The runes flare one final time, their light blindingly bright and filled with a malevolent joy that makes my stomach churn. Then the spell shatters, and everything goes dark.
I watch Halie struggle to maintain her spell, her face contorted with effort and pain.
The pit walls seem to pulse in time with her struggles, the ancient magic pushing back against her divine power like water against stone.
I feel a cold dread settle deep into my bones, a primal instinct screaming at me to flee this accursed place before it consumes us all. But Merrin lies trapped below, and Jeane has gone into that dark tunnel without support. We can't just run.
As Halie's spell finally shatters, the pit walls shudder violently, dust and small chunks of rock falling from the ceiling.
"Varrika!" I cry out, my voice barely audible over the groaning of the unstable stone. "We need to get Merrin out NOW!"
I scramble down the ladder, my hands shaking with fear and fatigue. Each rung feels like it might give way beneath me, plunging us all into the darkness below. Varrika is already at the bottom, her powerful arms straining as she tries to lift Merrin's unconscious form.
Together, we manage to hoist Merrin up onto the ledge of the pit, where I start frantically working to stabilize her with a minor healing spell.
Behind us, the skeletons that were held at bay by Seraphine's wards suddenly burst forward, their movements no longer jerky but terrifyingly fluid. One lunges for Varrika's back as she struggles with Merrin.
"Varrika, look out!" I shout, my hands still working over Merrin's body. I can feel the dark power of this place seeping into me, trying to pull me down into its depths like quicksand. We have to get out of here—now.
I glance around wildly for any escape route. The hidden tunnel Jeane disappeared into seems to be our only option now. "Varrika, help me carry Merrin into that passage! It's our only chance!"
I feel the skeleton's bony fingers scrape across my back as I heave Merrin's unconscious form up onto the ledge. With a growl of effort, I spin around and bring my mace down on the creature's skull with a sickening crunch. "Seraphine, grab Merrin!" I shout as I fend off another skeleton's clumsy swing with my crossbow stock. "We're taking her into that tunnel—it's our only chance!"
My eyes flick to the yawning darkness of the passage, then back to Jeane's fireball spell, still casting eerie shadows on the pit walls. "Jeane!" I call down into the depths, my voice echoing off the ancient stone. "If you can hear me, we're bugging out! Don't try to fight your way back up—we'll find another way to get Merrin out!"
I turn to Seraphine, my expression grim but determined. "You heard her—grab Merrin and start moving into that tunnel. I'll hold these bastards off as long as I can." My eyes harden with resolve. "Don't wait for me... if I don't make it out, you keep going and get Merrin to safety. That's an order."
I glance at Halie's crumpled form near the pit edge, my stomach twisting with worry. "Halie..." The word comes out as a choked sob. I swallow hard, trying to push down the rising panic. "Seraphine, look after her too. Don't... don't let anything happen to any of you."
