Round 18

Phase: escalating

The air inside the tower's base grew colder by the degree with each pulse of the ancient runes. Halie maintained her stabilization spell on sheer willpower, sweat beading on her forehead as the magic pushed back against her efforts like water against stone. The ground beneath Merrin had already given way once—she couldn't afford to let it happen again.
"Jeane!" the cleric called down into the darkness, her voice tight with urgency. "The wards are weakening—I can't hold this much longer! We need to move Merrin NOW before this whole section collapses!"
Seraphine felt a cold dread settle deep into her bones as Halie's spell faltered. The pit walls seemed to pulse in time with the cleric's struggles, the ancient magic pushing back against her divine power like water against stone.
Varrika grunted in exertion as she hauled Merrin's unconscious form up onto the ledge, her muscles straining with the effort. The dwarf woman's scarred face was set in a grim expression as she eyed the yawning darkness of the passage below.
This is either our salvation or our doom, she thought, but there was no other choice now.* With a grunt of effort, she heaved Merrin's unconscious form up onto her shoulder and started down the narrow tunnel stairs.
The stone walls seemed to pulse with dark energy in time with the runes above, and Jeane could feel something... alive... within the very structure of this place. She paused at the bottom, looking up at Halie's worried face framed by the opening above.
"Keep that stabilization spell going," Jeane called back, her voice echoing slightly in the confined space. "But don't push yourself too far—that magic feels unstable." Her crimson eyes fixed on Merrin's prone form at the bottom of the pit.
The ground gave way beneath Merrin's body with a sickening crack of breaking stone. The pressure plates had triggered something—some hidden mechanism that none of them had anticipated. A section of the wall slid open, revealing a narrow tunnel that descended deep into the earth.
Merrin's eyes fluttered open as she felt herself falling again, her head spinning from the sudden movement. The air inside the pit was thick with ancient magic that pressed against her skin like a physical weight.
The skeletons paused their advance, their empty sockets fixed on the newly revealed tunnel as if sensing an opportunity to trap the party further. Jeane's fireball spell flickered ominously as she descended deeper into the pit, the ancient magic here interfering with even her own arcane power.
Halie's stabilization spell wavered dangerously, and she felt a jolt of panic as the pit walls shuddered ominously. The magic here was too strong—she couldn't maintain this much longer without serious consequences.
