As the party continues to argue with Elric, the runes on the door begin to glow with an intense, pulsing light. The air around them vibrates with magical energy, making it difficult for them to focus. Suddenly, the ground beneath Merrin's feet gives way, and she finds herself plummeting down a hidden shaft. She manages to grab onto a rusty iron bar, narrowly avoiding a fatal fall. The other party members turn to look at her, concern etched on their faces. "Merrin!" Halie shouts, her voice carrying above the din of the magical energy. "Are you alright?"

Merrin's grip on the iron bar tightens as she looks around, taking in her surroundings. She is in a narrow, dimly lit tunnel, with ancient stone walls and a low ceiling. The air is thick with dust and the smell of decay. Elric's voice rings out from above, "You have passed the first test. But be warned, the trials ahead will only grow more challenging."

Halie

Halie · Cleric

This is bad. Really bad. I can feel it—the magic here is alive, hungry, ancient beyond measure. But Merrin—trap doors? Really? I should have expected something like this.*

"Wait!" I shout down the shaft, my voice echoing in the cavernous space. "Merrin, are you hurt? Can you hold on?" Please tell me she's not impaled or worse. Focus. Think tactically.

I crouch by the edge of the gaping hole, scanning for handholds or a way down. We need to get her up here before whatever else is down there decides she makes a good snack. Dammit—if we had proper tools, I could lower rope and—

I freeze as something moves in the shadows below. A low, grating sound echoes up from the darkness—a voice speaking in a language that makes my teeth ache just to hear it. "What was that?" I hiss, pressing closer to the edge without revealing myself fully. Something down there is definitely not human.*

This is exactly the kind of situation Varrika warned us about—traps leading to worse traps. But we can't leave Merrin. I need more information before I make a stupid decision here.

I look around frantically for any sign of magic—wards, triggers, weaknesses in the trap design. There has to be something I can work with. Come on... what are you hiding?

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I hear Merrin's shout cut off by a sickening thud as she falls into the hidden space below. My heart leaps into my throat. "Merrin!" I cry out, dropping to my knees at the edge of the sudden abyss that has opened up beneath our feet.
The ancient magic in the air feels different now, more alive and predatory. It seems to pulse in time with the frantic beating of my own heart. I lean over the edge, peering into the darkness, trying to catch a glimpse of her, but all I see is an impenetrable gloom.
"Can anyone see her?" I ask, my voice strained with worry as I scan the area for any sign of movement. The others are already frantically searching for a way down.
I turn back to the door, its runes pulsing with an eerie, almost mocking light. "This was no accident," I mutter under my breath. "This is exactly what we were trying to avoid—a trap leading to something worse."
The sound of shifting stone echoes from below, followed by a guttural growl that makes the hairs on my arms stand on end. Whatever is down there, it sounds massive and very, very angry.
I focus my thoughts, trying to call upon my magical senses. The air around me crackles with unseen energies, and I can feel the presence of powerful spells woven into the very fabric of this chamber. There must be a way to counter this trap without resorting to brute force.
"Jeane!" I call out, my voice cutting through the chaos. "Can you sense any ward or trigger magic down there? We need to know what we're dealing with before we send someone else in."
As I wait for her reply, I take a deep breath, steeling myself. Merrin is down there, and she needs our help. But we can't just rush in blindly. We have to be smart about this.
The runes on the door continue their frantic pulsing, seeming to beat like a second heart in the room. It’s almost as if they’re laughing at us, taunting us for our arrogance in thinking we could simply walk through this door without consequence.
I look back at Varrika and Halie, who are busy scouring the area for any means of descent. "We need to get her out of there now," I say, my voice firm despite the fear knotting in my stomach. "But we need a plan first. Jeane, please—what do you see?"

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I crouch at the edge of the pit, peering into the darkness, my hand gripping my mace tightly. "Merrin!" I call out, my voice echoing in the cavernous space. "Can you hear me? Are you alright?"

I can hear shuffling and the sound of something large moving in the shadows below. Damn it all, this is exactly what I was afraid of. A trap leading to something worse. And now Merrin's down there, facing God knows what alone.

I turn to the others, my expression grim. "We need to get her out of there now. Halie, can you sense any magic down there? Something we could use to slow whatever's chasing her?"

As I speak, I'm already scanning the area for anything that might help. A rusty old chain lies coiled in the corner, half-buried in the dust. It's not much, but it might be enough to lower someone down safely.

I look at Elric, who still stands impassively before the door, his eyes boring into each of us with an unyielding intensity. "You!" I growl, pointing my mace at him accusingly. "You knew this was here, didn't you? You set this up to test us. Well, congratulations. You've proven your point. Now help us get our friend back before it's too late!"

I turn back to the pit, my heart racing as I listen for any sign of Merrin or whatever monstrosity might be pursuing her in the darkness below. "Merrin!" I call out again, my voice echoing off the ancient stone walls. "Keep fighting! We're coming for you!"

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I circle the edge of the pit warily, my eyes scanning every inch of the ancient stonework for any sign of magical traps or triggers. The air down there feels wrong—thick with dark energy that makes even my skin crawl.

"This isn't just a simple pitfall," I mutter to myself, running a hand through my white hair as I lean over the edge cautiously. "There's something else down there. Something old and hungry." The rusty iron bar Merrin grabbed onto... it looks like an anchor point for something. A chain? A trapdoor mechanism? Focus.

I extend my senses, feeling for any magical signatures or active spells. There—faint traces of ward magic around the edges of the pit, but it's not triggered yet. Whatever set this up was careful to make sure only one of us fell in. Smart. Cruel.

"Halie," I call out, my voice carrying an edge of concern despite my efforts to stay calm. "Can you sense any protective magic on Merrin? Anything that might keep her safe from whatever's down there?" Because if she's got your blessing still active, we've got more time than I thought. If not... Damn it.

I turn back to the runes on the door, my eyes narrowing as they pulse faster in response to our predicament. "And you," I snap at Elric, pointing an accusatory finger at him despite the distance between us. "You knew this was here. You let her fall. That makes this your responsibility now."

With a grim determination settling over me, I reach for my mace and take a step towards the edge of the pit. We can't leave Merrin down there alone. But rushing in blindly would be suicide.

"Seraphine," I call out to the wizard across the chamber, "Start working on a teleportation spell or some kind of magical extraction—anything that gets her out without us having to go in." To the others, I add, "The rest of you, find something we can use as a rope or anchor. If we're going down there, we need to be able to get back up quickly."

As I wait for their responses, I extend my wings slightly, ready to take flight if needed. This is bad. This is very, very bad. But we don't have time to argue about it now.

"Merrin!" I shout down into the darkness, "Hold on! We're coming for you!"

But even as I call out, I can feel the dark magic pulsing below, growing stronger with each passing second. Whatever's down there knows we're here now. And it's waiting.
