Round 10

Phase: escalating

The air in the chamber grew heavy, crackling with barely contained energy that seemed to seep into their bones. Halie’s fingers tightened around her mace, the cold metal a stark contrast to the oppressive heat radiating from the ancient seals on the door. She’d seen magic like this before—twisted, hungry, wrong in ways that made her skin crawl. But she hadn’t expected to find it here, deep within what was supposed to be an abandoned tower.
“This is bad,” she muttered, more to herself than anyone else. “Real bad.” Her eyes darted around the chamber, taking in every detail—the flickering torchlight casting eerie shadows, the disturbed ground around the statue’s base, the pulsing violet glow of the seals that seemed to beat like a heart. “We need to be careful here,” she warned, her voice barely above a whisper. “Whatever made those skeletons outside... it’s still in here. And I don’t think it’s alone.”
Seraphine stepped forward, her sharp eyes narrowing as she studied the seals. “I can feel it too,” she said, her voice tight with apprehension. “This magic... it’s ancient and powerful, but it feels wrong somehow. Like it’s been twisted over time.” She drew a deep breath, her fingers tracing the intricate patterns on the stone. “We need to be cautious here. If these seals are still active, breaking them could release something we’re not prepared for.”
Varrika moved closer, her scarred face set in a grim expression. “I agree with the cautious part,” she growled. “But we can’t just stand here either. Merrin’s still down there, and we need to get her out.” She glanced at Halie, then back at the seals. “What do you think? Can we break these without setting off some kind of trap?”
Halie hesitated, her gaze fixed on the pulsing violet light. “I don’t know,” she admitted reluctantly. “The magic here... it’s unlike anything I’ve encountered before.” She took a step closer to the door, her mace held ready. “But we can’t leave Merrin down there. We need to find a way through these seals.”
Jeane circled the edge of the pit warily, her eyes scanning every inch of the ancient stonework for any sign of magical traps or triggers. The air down there felt wrong—thick with dark energy that made even her skin crawl. “This isn’t just a simple pitfall,” she muttered to herself, running a hand through her white hair as she leaned over the edge cautiously. “There’s something else down there. Something old and hungry.” The rusty iron bar Merrin had grabbed onto... it looked like an anchor point for something more sinister.
“Wait!” Halie shouted down the shaft, her voice echoing in the cavernous space. “Merrin, are you hurt? Can you hold on?” Please tell me she’s not impaled or worse. Focus. Think tactically. I crouch by the edge of the gaping hole, scanning for handholds or a way down. We need to get her up here before whatever else is down there gets to her first.
Seraphine moved closer to Halie, her expression concerned. “What if she’s seriously injured?” she asked in a low voice. “We can’t just leave her down there.”
Varrika nodded grimly. “I agree,” she said. “But we need to be smart about this.” She turned to Jeane. “Can you cast any spells that might help us reach her?”
Jeane shook her head. “Not without risking a magical backlash in this environment,” she replied. “The dark energy here is too unstable.”
Halie bit her lip, torn between the need to help Merrin and the fear of what might happen if they broke the seals. “We could try using the rope,” she suggested hesitantly. “If we lower it down carefully, maybe Merrin can tie it around herself and we can pull her up.”
Seraphine nodded slowly. “That’s our best option right now,” she agreed. “But we need to move fast. Those seals are starting to pulse faster—something’s changing down there.”
Varrika drew her mace, her eyes fixed on the darkness below. “Alright,” she growled. “Let’s do this before whatever’s down there decides to come up here instead.”
