The chamber's air shifted, magic thickening until it felt like breathing water. Jeane and Seraphine stood near the center, surrounded by crystals that pulsed with an inner light. Their eyes met across the space separating them—an unspoken acknowledgment passing between women who had survived a harrowing fall into unknown depths together.
"I don't like the silence," Jeane said softly, her voice barely disturbing the charged atmosphere. "In a place like this, silence usually means something's about to happen." She moved to stand beside Seraphine, close enough for easy communication but angled slightly toward the chamber's perimeter, wings half-spread in a posture of perpetual readiness.
Seraphine nodded, her sharp elven gaze scanning the crystal formations. "In a place like this," she murmured back, "I'd rather hear something—anything—than wait for whatever comes next." The air between them felt charged, not just with magic but with something more personal after their descent pressed them so intimately together.
The crystals pulsed faster, their light intensifying until the very walls seemed to breathe. Jeane's hand found Seraphine's again, fingers intertwining as if by instinct. "Stay close," she whispered. "Whatever happens next... we face it together."
