As Seraphine finishes her words, Varrika's eyes widen in understanding, and she takes a step forward, her gaze fixed on Khaos. "I saw... I felt like I was being pulled towards something," she says, her voice barely above a whisper. "A guiding force, like Khaos was leading me towards the pool." Merrin, still holding the ancient tome, looks up, her eyes shining with excitement. "I found this map that seems to match the patterns on Khaos," she says, opening the book to reveal intricate symbols and markings. However, as they gather around Khaos, the ethereal forest begins to shift and distort, as if it's being manipulated by their very presence. The ground beneath them gives way, revealing a hidden pit, and Jeane's eyes widen in alarm as she realizes they're now standing on the edge of a precarious cliff.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane's crimson eyes widen as she feels the ground beneath her shift. "Everyone back!" she commands, spreading her wings instinctively for balance even as the cliff edge crumbles away behind them. Her voice is sharp with authority, but there’s an undertone of genuine alarm—the kind that makes her hair stand on end despite centuries of composure. She grabs Seraphine by the arm and pulls her back from Khaos just as the entity begins to emit a warning hum—a sound like grinding stones that raises every instinct in Jeane's body. "This is not an accident," she hisses, scanning the shifting forest around them with predatory focus.

Her gaze flicks between Varrika and Merrin—reunited companions she can't fully trust yet—and then back to Khaos. The orb pulses ominously in time with the forest's transformations. "You both claim guidance here?" she asks, her voice dripping skepticism even as she keeps them all from falling off the literal cliff. "Khaos pulls you like a magnet while showing visions of... what? Unity? Purpose?"

She snorts softly—a sound that manages to be elegant and dismissive at once. "Or is this precisely what it wants—to separate us by fear or lure us together into a shared grave?" Her hand tightens on her mace as the air grows heavy with magical pressure. "Because if you felt tugged here, so did we. The moment Seraphine touched Khaos, reality started collapsing around us."

Jeane's wings beat once—a reflexive adjustment of stance that keeps them all from sliding closer to the abyss. "Merrin," she says, her tone shifting to something almost like genuine interest beneath the suspicion, "that tome. Show me." She extends a hand, not for the book itself but for Merrin to approach her directly—into what she considers safer ground away from the cliff edge and Khaos's influence.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I feel a chill trace its way down my spine as Jeane's words cut through the charged air, her suspicion a sharp contrast to the revelatory warmth Khaos had just shown me.
The ground shifts again beneath our feet, and I instinctively press myself closer to Jeane, my heart hammering against my ribs. Her arm around me is solid, grounding me in this suddenly precarious reality.
My gaze darts from Jeane’s stern expression to Varrika and Merrin, who look equally unsettled by the cliff edge and the forest's strange behavior. A part of me wants to believe in what Khaos showed us—that our connection is the key to everything—but Jeane's distrust feels justified given the immediate danger.
"I... I don't think this is a trap," I say, my voice trembling slightly as I try to project more confidence than I feel. "Not in the way you mean, at least. Khaos didn't lie to me—it showed me our journey, our struggles, how we've been brought together for a reason."
I take a deep breath, steeling myself before turning my attention back to Merrin and the ancient tome she holds.
"Merrin, show us what you found," I say, my tone becoming more assertive now. I gesture towards Jeane’s outstretched hand, a silent acknowledgment of her protective stance. "Maybe it can help us understand this place better—what we’re seeing here and why our bond might be so important."
My eyes return to Khaos, its surface still swirling with mesmerizing patterns. The humming sound grows louder, more insistent—a warning or an invitation? I can feel its power pulsing through me again, but this time it’s mixed with a healthy dose of Jeane's distrust.
I look at my companions, seeing the fear and confusion mirrored on their faces. We've faced countless dangers together, but nothing quite like this—magic so potent it seems to reshape reality itself.
"We need to figure out what's happening here," I say, my voice firming with resolve. "If our bond is truly the source of power in this realm—and if Khaos guided us all to be here now—then we have to work together. To understand it." I meet each of their eyes in turn—Varrika’s stoic determination, Merrin’s excited curiosity, Jeane’s guarded suspicion. "But first, we need to get somewhere safer. This cliff isn't helping our cause."
My hand drifts towards the Time-Splitting Sword at my hip, a familiar comfort in this strange new landscape. It feels different now, charged with the same energy as Khaos—but also separate, like a key to a lock we haven’t found yet. "Whatever this is, we can't solve it by falling off the edge of the world." I give Jeane a small, grateful smile, showing my appreciation for her quick thinking and protective instincts. "Lead on, Captain. Let's see what that map of Merrin's reveals—and if our connection really is strong enough to get us through this alive."
