Jeane's grip on Seraphine's hand tightens as they're pulled through the swirling water. The tunnel's darkness closes in around them, the only sound the pounding of their hearts and the distant rumble of collapsing stone. Suddenly, a faint glow emanates from Seraphine's staff, illuminating a narrow ledge they'd almost missed. The ledge stretches out before them, a precarious handhold in the dark passage.

I gasp for air, my chest heaving as we finally reach the relative safety of the narrow ledge. The water swirls below us, its surface now illuminated by the faint glow of my staff. I cling to the cold stone, my fingers trembling with the effort of holding on.
"By the gods," I pant out, my voice hoarse and strained. "That was too close."
My eyes dart around the small space we've managed to pull ourselves into. It's little more than a wide crack in the wall, just large enough for us to perch on its edge. The water is still rising, though at a slower pace now, lapping at the bottom of the ledge with ominous gentleness.
I turn my head towards Jeane, who looks equally shaken but determined. Her hair is plastered to her face, and her wings are held close to her body for warmth. The mace is still gripped tightly in one hand, even after everything we've just been through.
"Are you alright?" I ask, my concern overriding the lingering fear that still courses through my veins. I reach out a hand, touching her shoulder lightly. She nods, a sharp jerk of her chin, but doesn't speak. Her eyes are fixed on the dark water below us.
I follow her gaze and see what she’s looking at—the artifact we saw earlier in the pool. It's caught in a small eddy near our ledge, its surface reflecting the dim light from my staff with an unsettling intensity. It seems to beckon me closer, a silent promise of power and knowledge. A part of me yearns to reach out and snatch it up right then, to finally get my hands on some piece of this puzzle we're trapped in. But another, wiser part of my mind screams at the foolhardiness of such a move.
I shake my head, trying to clear the thought away. We’re not out of danger yet; if anything, our situation has become even more precarious now that we’re trapped in this narrow tunnel.
"We need to keep moving," I say, my voice regaining some of its earlier resolve as I force myself to focus on the immediate problem. "This ledge might buy us some time, but it won't last forever. The water will rise again soon."
I look back at Jeane, waiting for her to confirm she’s ready to continue. We can’t afford to waste this brief moment of respite on idle talk—not when there are still so many threats left in the dark.
