The stone passage filled with rushing water, the sound growing from a distant trickle to a roar that vibrated through the walls. Jeane and Seraphine stood ankle-deep in the rapidly rising liquid, their breaths coming in short gasps as the cold seeped into their bones. The air crackled with unseen energy, different from the oppressive presence back in the chamber—this felt primal, raw.

Suddenly, Jeane's injured leg gave out. She cried out as she slammed against the rough stone wall, sliding down until she was crouched with one hand braced against the rising water. The wound on her thigh pulsed with fresh pain, blood mixing with the dark liquid swirling around her exposed skin. Her crimson eyes flickered unnaturally in the gloom, the light within them pulsing like a trapped heartbeat.

"You can feel it," Jeane ground out through clenched teeth, her voice strained. "It's getting stronger. Using this fucking wound like a wedge to pry open my control panel and hijack everything I built with my own two hands and this big dumb cock between them." She laughed bitterly, the sound echoing off the stone walls. "We've got maybe minutes before I lose enough of myself that you don't recognize me anymore. That door closed but the water's still rising—this tunnel is a death trap designed for one thing: drowning out our voices in a flood of regrets."

Seraphine stared at her friend, sharp elven eyes widening with horror. "I understand," she said fiercely, her voice cutting through the rushing water. "But what kind of spell are you trying to cast? We need to know what we're getting into." Jeane shook her head, a grim smile on her face that didn't reach her unnaturally bright eyes.

"Something stupid," she admitted, her voice dropping to a dangerous purr. "Doing what I do best—fucking things up with style and a whole lot of desperation. Hold onto something, because this is going to hurt like hell."

The water was already up to their waists now, swirling with increasing speed as it flowed toward some unseen outlet. Jeane struggled to maintain her grip on the wall as the current tugged at her, the dark reflection inside her eyes flickering like a candle in the wind. Seraphine grabbed a protruding stone spike from the wall with one hand while maintaining her grip on her heavy spellbook with the other.

"I'm going to try and slow this flow," she shouted over the rushing water. "Hold onto something—anything!" The magical energy around her hands began to coalesce, shaping itself into a series of complex symbols that sparked with arcane power.

Jeane nodded, her free hand frantically searching for purchase on the slick stone wall. The water was up to their necks now, the current threatening to submerge them completely. She found a jagged edge and dug her fingers in, gritting her teeth against the pain as the stone bit into her skin.

"Do it!" she yelled, her voice barely audible over the roar of the rushing water. Seraphine released her spell, the arcane energy exploding outward in a wave that slammed into the narrowing passage. The flow fought back for a moment, then began to slow as the magical current pushed against its natural momentum.

"Now!" Jeane screamed, her fingers slipping from the stone edge as the water pulled her downstream. She twisted in the current, her wings beating frantically to keep her head above water. Seraphine surged forward, diving into the flow and wrapping her arms around her friend just as they both disappeared beneath the surface.

The magical counter-current held for a precious few seconds, buying them just enough time to be swept through the narrow gap at the end of the passage rather than being pulled downstream to whatever lay beyond. They emerged gasping into a larger chamber filled with still water that came up to their chests, both women clinging to each other in the sudden calm.

Jeane coughed up water, her wings drooping as she fought to catch her breath. The dark reflection still flickered in her eyes, but it seemed weaker now, pushed back by the desperate magic Seraphine had used to slow the flow. "Thanks," she gasped between breaths. "I owe you one."

Seraphine nodded, her own chest heaving as she tried to regain control of her breathing. "We're not out of this yet," she said grimly. "The others—we need to find them." Jeane nodded in agreement, the two women slowly beginning to paddle through the chest-deep water toward what they hoped was a way out.
