The ash‑choked road curves toward Gravehill’s ruined outskirts, its surface littered with blackened stone and drifting embers. A low, storm‑dark sky hangs heavy above, clouds swirling in a slow, ominous churn. The abandoned church looms ahead, its cracked spire barely visible through the haze, a skeletal silhouette against the dying light. Gravel crunches underfoot as the party’s lantern casts wavering shadows along the path. A rusted key lies half‑buried beside a broken flagstone, glinting faintly in the lantern’s glow. Nearby, a lone, frightened gravedigger—Renn—stares from a distance, his eyes flicking nervously toward the approaching figures. The air smells of damp earth and distant smoke, thick with the scent of decay.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane crouched by the half-buried key, her movements deliberate and precise. She plucked it from the ash with gloved fingers, turning it over in the lantern light. Rusted iron, old craftsmanship—she traced the teeth with a careful nail. No obvious maker's mark, but the size suggested something substantial: not a common lock. A church door? A city treasury? The key might unlock secrets faster than her spells could reveal them. She stood, showing it to Silra and Hale. "This belongs to the dead magistrate we heard about," she said coolly. "It opens something in this cursed place."

Silra

Silra · Rogue

Silra moved toward Gravedigger Renn with practiced, unhurried menace—every predator knows fear is a tool, especially when the prey is already terrified. Her hand rested casually on her dagger hilt as she closed distance through the ash, voice low and sharp enough to cut. "You've been watching us for longer than polite interest allows. The dead don't care if you watch, but the living... we wonder why." Renn flinched visibly, his gaze darting between Silra and the church looming behind her. She had him marked now: a coward who'd spill anything to survive.

Sister Hale

Sister Hale · Cleric

Sister Hale stepped forward with measured authority, her voice cutting through the tense silence. "Wait!" She moved between Silra and Renn, her unholy symbol catching the lantern light—a clear sign of a figure who might offer protection or judgment. Her tone was firm but not threatening. "We mean no harm to you. We seek only knowledge of this place." The gravedigger's eyes darted between them, fear warring with confusion on his ash-stained face.
