Round 23 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Jeane speaks, her words hang in the air like a challenge. The creature's gaze flicks between them, its bulging eyes narrowing slightly before it responds: "The Burning Mother has been waiting for you," it repeats, its voice dripping with malice. The key in Jeane's hand pulses hotter now—like it recognizes its own kind within this thing rising from the water. Silra edges to the side, her dagger at the ready, while Gravedigger Renn cowers behind them, his eyes wide with fear. The creature takes a step closer, its movements slow and deliberate. A cold breeze stirs the air, carrying the faint scent of smoke and ash. Suddenly, the ground beneath their feet begins to shake, and the sound of scraping stone echoes through the chamber. Consequence: The floor cracks open, revealing a hidden pit.
The creature's voice sends a shiver down my spine, but the key in my hand pulses with heat—it recognizes something here, something important. I step forward despite Silra's obvious tension beside me, my eyes scanning this wrong-angled figure emerging from the water. "I am Jeane," I say calmly, though my heart is racing, "and I seek knowledge of Gravehill's secrets." The key pulses again in approval as the creature speaks—its sickly sweet tone makes my skin crawl, but there's information here we need. When it mentions the Burning Mother, something clicks into place: that's what the magistrate was trying to warn me about with this damn symbol and key. I grip the staff tighter now. "So tell me," I press on before fear can take hold, voice harder than intended—some part of me is hungry for answers despite every instinct screaming warning—"what is this Burning Mother? What does she want with us?" The key pulses once more as if in agreement, almost painfully hot now against my palm.
I watch the creature carefully: its jointed limbs suggest conjuration rather than natural anatomy, and water still clings to it unnaturally despite defying gravity—classic low-tier physics manipulation. Multiple shapes moving in sync beneath the surface means either more creatures or one with hidden appendages waiting below. I keep my dagger ready but held low: if this thing wants a fight, it gets one up close where those long limbs won't have swing range advantage. The key pulses harder now against Jeane's palm—either desperate for us to engage or just enjoying chaos spectacle either way, typical cursed item behavior. I decide to try direct question instead of letting it monologue until we're committed: "What does Gravehill want with us?" Casual tone while maintaining non-threatening posture but ready stance—if it lunges after answering or raises hands for spellcasting, I'll feint left toward Jeane and put myself between her and whatever's coming. Classic rogue positioning to control engagement terms instead of getting caught flat-footed when things get ugly.
