The ground bucked again beneath their feet, harder this time—a living thing waking from long sleep. The rumble became an eruption: stone and dirt spewing outward as something massive began breaking surface. A section of crumbling street ahead heaved upward like a breaching whale, then split apart with wet tearing sounds.

Silra crouched low at the crossroads, pressing her palm flat against the ground while her eyes scanned every inch of the shadowed streets around them. The vibration came again—rhythmic now, unmistakably purposeful—and she recognized it instantly: something massive was climbing toward the surface below their feet.

"This isn't some petty guardian or trapped treasure chest," Silra said quietly to the others. "Whatever stirred in Gravehill's depths moves with the patient certainty of something ancient and hungry—an entity that has lain dormant for centuries, perhaps millennia, waiting for... what? For us?" The ground bucked beneath her boots like a living thing waking from long sleep.

A section of crumbling street ahead began to move unnaturally, stone grinding against stone as something massive forced its way upward. The earth split open with wet tearing sounds—dirt and rubble spraying outward—and then a monstrous form began emerging: fifteen feet long at minimum, segmented like an insect but carved from some chitinous material that glistened darkly even in the dim street light.

The creature's true face emerged as its upper segments rose above the ground—a human-shaped visage with featureless skin save for two glowing points where eyes should have been. "I smell the blood of my kin on you," it hissed, voice carrying now as words rather than mere vibration. The focus of those glowing points shifted toward Jeane specifically.

Sister Hale moved immediately into a protective stance between the horror and her companions, mace raised in both hands. "We're not bargaining with whatever crawled out of this city's grave," she snarled back at the creature. "You were buried under that church for a reason—something the city founders wanted to keep sealed away."
