Round 156

Phase: resolution · forced · organic escalating

Halie moved with purpose through the charged atmosphere of the penthouse suite. She positioned herself deliberately between Jeane and the rest of the team, her blue-grey eyes steady despite the tension thrumming through the building's structure.
"I think we all need to breathe for a moment," Halie said, her voice calm but firm. "Jeane, come with me onto the balcony. The fresh air might help clear your head." She didn't wait for agreement, simply gestured toward the door leading outside. The cool night air would do them both good—give Jeane space to wrestle her nature into submission and provide Halie a chance to assess whether her friend posed an immediate risk.
The building chose that moment to emit another low groan, the sound vibrating through the floorboards. Halie felt it in her teeth, a physical reminder of their precarious situation. Forty minutes had passed since Silra began reinforcing the structure—time was running out.
"Silra," Halie called over her shoulder, "we'll be right back. Keep doing what you do best." She didn't elaborate, didn't mention the visible strain in the engineer's posture or the way her hands trembled slightly as they worked metal fittings. Some burdens were meant to be borne alone.
Jeane followed Halie out onto the balcony without protest, her movements jerky and controlled. The cool night air hit them both like a slap, but it did little to ease the heat building beneath Jeane's skin. Halie closed the door behind them, creating a thin barrier between them and the escalating situation inside.
"What's really happening in there?" Halie asked without preamble, her eyes searching Jeane's face for any sign of slipping control. "Because if you can't manage it, we need to know now before things get worse."
Jeane opened her mouth to speak, then closed it again, struggling to find the right words. The conflict raged inside her—human will versus succubus instinct—and she wasn't sure which would win the battle for dominance tonight.
"I'm trying," she managed finally, her voice tight with effort. "But every time I think I have it under control, something else happens." She gestured vaguely toward the building around them. "It's like the place itself is feeding my other half, making everything harder."
Halie's expression softened fractionally, though her stance remained firm. "I understand that better than you might think," she admitted quietly. "But we can't afford for you to lose control right now—not with Silra working so hard inside and Abby barely holding it together." She paused, choosing her next words carefully. "If you need to step back, say so. We'll find another way."
Jeane shook her head vehemently. "No. I won't abandon them again." The determination in her eyes was genuine, even if the fire behind it had a predatory edge that hadn't been there before.
"Then we figure this out together," Halie said, her voice leaving no room for argument. "Because right now, you're my sister-in-arms and I need your head clear." She reached out, gripped Jeane's shoulder firmly—more a grounding gesture than an embrace. "Deep breaths. Focus on the cool air. Remember who you are."
The conversation continued in low tones on the balcony, words exchanged between two women bound by shared trials and dangerous alliances. Inside, Silra worked on in silence, the rhythmic sound of her tools a counterpoint to the building's increasing demands. Time ticked inexorably forward, each passing second bringing them closer to the unknown consequences of failure.
