Hera shifted her weight from one foot to the other, her eyes darting between Jeane and Silra. The air in the room felt thick with tension, heavy with the scent of melted metal and something else—something that made her skin tingle and her pulse quicken despite her best efforts to remain calm. She could feel it, the building's hunger growing more insistent with each passing second.
"Silra," she said, her voice coming out rougher than she intended, "how much longer do you think this will take? We're running out of time." Her amber eyes flicked to Jeane, noting the way the other woman's body seemed to writhe subtly against some unseen force. Hera knew better than most what was happening inside Jeane right now—the struggle between human consciousness and succubus instinct—and it made her stomach churn with disgust even as a traitorous part of her brain supplied images she didn't want.
Jeane's head snapped up at the sound of Hera's voice, her eyes wide and unfocused for just an instant before clarity returned. She took a deep breath, visibly steadying herself. "I'm fine," she said, though her voice wavered slightly. "Just... keep working on that wall." Her gaze dropped back to the floor, as if unable to meet Hera's eyes.
Silra didn't respond immediately, her focus entirely on the welder in her hands. Sparks flew as she cut through another piece of metal, the hiss and clank of the machine filling the sudden silence between them. When she finally spoke, her voice was strained but determined. "I'm almost done with this section," she said. "But we need to reinforce at least three more before the next cycle hits." She glanced up briefly, her face flushed from the heat of the welder—and something else. Hera noticed the way Silra's nipples seemed to press against her shirt, the flush spreading down her neck.
Forty minutes until the building demanded more. The thought sent a fresh wave of anxiety through Hera, mixed with an unwanted surge of arousal that made her clench her jaw in frustration. This wasn't right—none of this was right. They shouldn't have to do these things just to keep the damn building from collapsing.
But as she watched Silra work, her hands moving with practiced efficiency even as her breathing grew more ragged, Hera couldn't help but notice the way the other woman's body responded to the psychic pressure. It wasn't just Jeane—the building's demands were affecting all of them now, wearing away at their resistance with each passing moment.
"Goddammit," she muttered under her breath, crossing her arms tightly across her chest as if that could somehow shield her from the creeping tendrils of arousal that seemed to seep through every surface in this cursed place. She needed to stay focused, needed to find a way out of this situation that didn't involve...
No. She wouldn't think about it. Wouldn't give in to those thoughts. Not yet, anyway.
"Hera," Silra said suddenly, breaking the tense silence between them. "Can you grab some of those brackets from the bag? I need to reinforce the joints on this next section." Her voice was still steady, but Hera could see a fine tremor running through her hands as she set down the welder and reached for a piece of cut metal.
Hera nodded, moving quickly to comply. As she bent to rummage through the tool bag, she found herself glancing back at Jeane. The other woman had moved closer to the wall now, her palms pressed flat against it as if drawing strength from the contact. Her eyes were closed, her breathing shallow and rapid.
This was wrong. All of it. But right now, all they could do was keep moving forward, keep trying to outpace the building's demands with sheer determination and... whatever else this place demanded of them.
Hera straightened up with the brackets in hand, her gaze lingering on Jeane for just a moment longer before she turned back to Silra. Together, maybe they could figure this out. Before it was too late.
