Phase: resolution · forced · organic escalating

The barrier field pulsed with Jeane’s rising irritation, electricity crawling along the translucent surface like living wire. Hera stood on the other side, clutching a bottle of lubricant she’d somehow snatched despite the obvious danger, her amber eyes blazing with fierce determination. The woman hadn’t flinched once during the electrical discharge—either incredibly lucky or completely oblivious to risk.
“You’re putting Abby in danger,” Jeane said, her voice cool but laced with genuine concern beneath the surface irritation. “I told you both—this place is compromised. Whatever’s happening down there isn’t natural.”
Silra tensed beside her, ready to intervene if needed. The elf had spent years as a rogue and thief in New York’s underworld, honing instincts that screamed at Hera’s reckless behavior. She knew the woman meant well—knew she was driven by genuine love for Abby—but every instinct screamed that this was a terrible idea.
“I don’t care about your little games or your fucking barrier,” Hera growled back, taking another step forward as if the electrical field posed no threat at all. “Abby is in there. I’m not leaving her to whatever this... creature has planned.”
The air crackled with tension—electrical discharge mixing with something darker that seemed to seep from Jeane’s every pore. She’d already demonstrated her power once, and Silra knew the succubus was barely holding herself in check.
“Wait,” she said sharply, stepping forward before Jeane could respond further. “Let me scout ahead first. You know I can move quietly—”
Jeane cut her off with a sharp gesture, field intensifying briefly. “No. Both of you stay here. I’ll handle this.”
Silra felt her jaw tighten but held her tongue. Arguing with Jeane when she was like this would only make things worse. The succubus had made it clear she considered herself in charge—considered herself the one who could handle any threat.
“Fine,” Hera snapped, clearly frustrated by both women’s refusal to let her simply rush in. “Then tell me what the hell is going on down there.”
Jeane’s expression shifted, a cold smile playing at her lips as she considered how much to reveal. The truth—that Abby was likely being used as a plaything by some powerful succubus—wasn’t something Hera needed to hear right now. Not until Jeane had things properly under control.
“I’ll explain everything,” she said smoothly, voice dripping with false reassurance. “But first, you need to calm down and let me handle this my way.”
Silra watched the exchange unfold, torn between concern for Abby and genuine worry about what Jeane might be planning. The succubus had already demonstrated her ability to manipulate situations—and people—for her own ends. And right now, that manipulative streak was on full display.
“I don’t need to calm down,” Hera insisted, though her grip on the lube bottle loosened slightly. “I just want Abby back safe.”
Jeane’s smile widened fractionally. “And she will be. Trust me, Hera—I have everything under control.”
The field between them shimmered ominously as Jeane continued speaking in that same smooth, reassuring tone. Silra knew better than to trust it—knew the succubus was likely already working her influence on Hera, subtly shifting her emotions and perceptions.
“I’ll bring Abby back,” Jeane promised, voice dropping to a seductive purr. “You have my word.”
Silra felt a chill run down her spine at that promise. Jeane’s word meant something very different than what most people intended when they spoke those words. The elf knew exactly what kind of “safety” the succubus was capable of offering—and it wasn’t the kind Hera had in mind.
But before she could voice any of her concerns, Jeane turned her attention back to the barrier field, fingers moving in complex patterns as she manipulated the electricity. The air crackled with renewed energy, and Silra knew better than to interrupt when the succubus was focused like this.
All she could do was watch, heart pounding, as Jeane prepared to “rescue” Abby in her own unique way.
