Round 31

Phase: escalating

The elf's eyes narrowed fractionally as she watched Hera take a protective stance. Her hand remained near the hilt of her concealed blade, ready to draw if needed. She spoke to Jeane without breaking eye contact with you. "I think we have a misunderstanding here," Silra said coolly. "Abby is under my protection until she chooses otherwise. And right now, she seems... unsettled by your approach." Her tone carried an underlying threat, barely veiled.
Silra shifted her weight slightly, the movement bringing her closer to the edge of the conversation circle while maintaining a clear line of sight between Hera and Jeane.
The succubus's lips curved into something that might be a smile or a predatory grin. She took a small step back, raising her hands in a placating gesture that somehow managed to emphasize the curves of her body rather than soothe. "Oh, darling," Jeane purred, addressing Hera directly now. "There's no need for such hostility. I simply wanted to welcome our new guests properly." Her amber eyes gleamed with an otherworldly light as she continued, "I assure you, Abby is perfectly safe here. Everyone is."
Jeane's gaze flicked briefly to Silra before returning to Hera, a flicker of calculation in her expression.
The succubus's words and the way her eyes lingered on me made my skin crawl despite the lingering heat from earlier activities. I could feel Abby trembling slightly behind me, her hands gripping the back of my shirt. "Safe is a relative term," I shot back, my voice tight with barely contained anger. "And I'm not interested in whatever kind of 'proper welcome' you're offering." My eyes darted to Silra, noting her alert posture and the hand still near her weapon. At least we had one ally here who seemed to understand the potential danger.
I shifted my stance slightly, ready to react if Jeane made any sudden moves.
The elf's expression remained impassive, but there was a new tension in her shoulders as she watched the exchange. She spoke again, her voice carrying a warning edge. "Jeane, I think it would be best if you gave our guests some space to... acclimate." Her hand moved fractionally closer to her blade, the movement almost imperceptible unless you were watching closely.
Silra's teal eyes flicked to the other women in the room—Lily still sprawled on the couch, Mia and Zoe engaged in their own passionate embrace nearby—and something like concern crossed her features before vanishing.
Jeane's smile didn't falter, but there was a new calculation in her eyes as she considered Silra's words. She took another small step back, giving Hera and Abby more space. "Of course, of course," the succubus said smoothly. "I wouldn't want to make anyone uncomfortable." Her gaze swept over the group, lingering on each woman in turn with an intensity that made my stomach twist.
Jeane's form shimmered slightly, as if heat haze was distorting her outline, though the air conditioning in the penthouse was working perfectly.
The way Jeane's eyes raked over everyone made me even more certain we needed to get out of here. But first, I needed to make sure Abby was okay and that Silra wasn't going to suddenly switch sides. "Look," I said, my voice low and intense as I turned slightly to face Abby without breaking eye contact with Jeane. "Are you okay? Do you want to leave?"
I reached back with one hand, gently squeezing Abby's arm in a gesture of support.
The elf's attention snapped back to the conversation as Hera addressed Abby directly. She took a half-step forward, positioning herself slightly between Jeane and the two women without quite entering their space. Her voice was neutral but carried an underlying current of curiosity. "If you're considering leaving," Silra said to Hera and Abby, "I should mention that the elevators have been... disabled for the evening." Her eyes met Hera's briefly, a silent communication passing between them.
Silra's hand finally moved away from her blade hilt, but she remained alert, her posture ready.
The succubus's expression shifted to one of amused interest as Silra revealed the elevator situation. She leaned against the wall casually, her pose somehow both relaxed and predatory. "Oh yes," Jeane confirmed with a light laugh. "We wouldn't want anyone leaving too soon, would we? The night is young, after all." Her eyes gleamed with an otherworldly light as she added, "Besides, I'm sure you'll find the... alternative methods of exit much more entertaining."
Jeane's fingers trailed along the wall as she moved, leaving faint traces of glowing residue that faded almost instantly.
The implication behind Jeane's words sent a fresh wave of unease through me. Alternative methods? What the hell did that mean? I exchanged a worried glance with Abby, then looked to Silra for any sign of what we should do next. This situation was spiraling out of control fast, and I wasn't sure how much longer I could keep us safe from whatever the fuck was going on here.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. We needed information, and Silra seemed like our best bet for now.
The elf's expression darkened fractionally at Jeane's words, but she didn't respond directly to the succubus. Instead, she turned her full attention to Hera and Abby, her voice lowering slightly. "Listen, I don't know what's going on here any more than you do," Silra said frankly. "But I've seen enough strange shit tonight to know that leaving might not be as simple as it sounds." She glanced at the other women in the room—Lily still dazed on the couch, Mia and Zoe lost in their own world—before continuing. "I'm not saying we should stay, but... we need to be careful."
Silra moved closer, her voice dropping further. "Whatever this place is, whatever Jeane is... I don't trust it. But for now, staying together might be our best option."
