The contract lay between them like a snake waiting to strike—its language smooth, its promises tempting, its clauses designed to ensnare the unwary. Silra leaned over it, her teal eyes scanning each word with the focus of someone who'd seen too many deals go sour. Every phrase was weighed, every loophole examined; she wasn't about to let some demon contractor pull one over on her twice.

Halie watched from nearby, her hand resting on her mace hilt—a silent reminder that not everyone in this room was unarmed or unprepared. "Silra..." she began, her voice tight with barely contained alarm. "You can't seriously be considering—"

"Of course I am," Silra cut in, not looking up from the document. Her fingers tapped a specific line. "'Recipient agrees to provide physical loyalty as defined by Provider.' Sounds awfully flexible, don't you think?" She finally glanced up at Halie, her expression caught between amusement and calculation. "I mean, what kind of loyalty are we talking here? The 'let's grab coffee twice a week' kind or the 'drop everything and come running whenever called' variety?"

Halie shifted her weight, uncomfortable with where this was headed. "Both sound like trouble," she muttered. "Especially the latter." Her eyes flicked to Jeane—still standing there in that unnerving stillness, watching them both with those too-still red eyes. "You can't trust anything a succubus says about loyalty, Silra. They twist words like they breathe air."

Silra snorted. "I know that. I'm not an idiot." She turned back to the contract, flipping through pages with quick, efficient movements. "But think about it—if we could actually define our own terms here? Set boundaries she had to respect?" Her voice carried a thread of excitement despite her best efforts to sound casual. "That might be worth something."

Halie's grip on her mace tightened involuntarily. "Or it might be the perfect trap," she hissed. "You'd be signing away your autonomy for however long she decides—"

"Long enough to get us out of this mess," Silra countered, finally meeting Halie's eyes fully. There was a dangerous gleam in her teal gaze, the one that said she'd already thought several steps ahead and was just waiting for Halie to catch up—or fall behind. "Come on, Halie. You know I've got angles of my own. I'm not just going to sign anything—"

"Then what are you doing?" Halie demanded, her patience wearing thin.

Silra grinned, a flash of teeth that was equal parts excitement and mischief. "I'm negotiating," she said simply. And with that, she stood up, folding the contract neatly into her pocket and striding past Halie toward the door. "I'll be back. Try not to let our demonic host charm you into anything while I'm gone."

Halie stared after her friend, torn between exasperation and genuine concern. She knew Silra was smart—knew she'd seen worse contracts than this one—but there was something about Jeane that set Halie's teeth on edge in a way no ordinary demon ever had. And now, alone with the succubus again, she had to wonder exactly what kind of game they were playing.

Jeane hadn't moved, hadn't spoken since Silra left. She simply stood there, those red eyes fixed on the spot where the rogue had disappeared through the door. When Halie cleared her throat, trying to break the silence, Jeane's gaze finally shifted to her.

"Your friend has a sharp mind," she said softly, almost approvingly. "She'll make an excellent... partner."

Halie bristled at the word. "Partner? Is that what you're calling it?" She took a step forward, letting her mace slide free just enough to make her point clear. "Because where I come from, partners don't try to seduce each other into binding contracts."

Jeane's lips curved into something that might have been a smile if it didn't look so predatory. "Oh, but the seduction is merely a means to an end," she purred. "The contract... that's the true partnership." She took a step forward to match Halie's advance, closing the distance between them with fluid grace. "Tell me, cleric—what would you offer your friends in exchange for power? Your faith? Your body? Your very soul?"

Halie didn't flinch, though her heart rate picked up a notch. She'd faced demons before, but something about Jeane's presence felt... different. More intense. More dangerous. "I'd offer them my skill with a mace," she said evenly, raising the weapon slightly. "And my unwavering dedication to protecting them from creatures like you."

Jeane laughed, a sound like wind chimes in a gale force wind. "Oh, you underestimate me." In a blink, she was closer—too close for comfort. Halie raised her mace fully, ready to strike if needed. But Jeane simply stood there, barely within arm's reach, her red eyes seeming to glow in the dim room. "I don't want your soul, little cleric," she whispered. "I want something far more... valuable."

"What?" Halie demanded, her grip on the mace handle going white-knuckled.

Jeane's smile widened, showing just a hint of fang. "Your fear," she said softly. "Your doubt. Your uncertainty." She reached out, one finger tracing along the edge of Halie's mace—so close it would take barely any movement for the blunt head to connect with her chest. "Because while your friend Silra might be clever... you, my dear... are so very easy to manipulate."

Before Halie could react, Jeane vanished in a swirl of crimson smoke that left the taste of copper on her tongue and the certainty of impending doom settling heavy in her gut. She stood there for long moments after the succubus disappeared, her heart pounding, her breathing ragged, and wondered just what kind of game they'd stumbled into—and whether any of them would emerge unscathed.
