Phase: converging · forced · organic escalating

The wardstone's rhythm hammered through the penthouse like a death knell, each pulse more insistent than the last. Jeane felt her concentration shredding—maintaining the barrier spell against that kind of raw corruption took every ounce of will and power she possessed, especially while her body betrayed her with milk leaking from her aching breasts. "Silra!" Her voice cracked with barely controlled panic as she shouted into the darkness where her rogue had vanished with that damned mirror they needed to brace the door Halie was desperately trying to hold shut with her burned hands. The pulses were growing stronger, each beat like a fist hammering against wood and stone. She could feel it through the soles of her boots, an ominous rhythm that made her stomach twist with dread.
Halie grunted with effort, pressing harder against the door frame and shoving the heavy mirror into place. Her palms screamed in protest—burned raw from earlier contact with the wardstone's energy—and now coated in a slippery mixture of lubricant and water flooding out from the broken shower stall. The pulses were becoming more frequent, each beat like a fist hammering against wood and stone. She could feel it through the soles of her boots, an ominous rhythm that made her stomach twist with dread.
"H... Hold on!" she gasped, struggling to keep her grip as the mirror slid precariously. The last thing they needed was for this makeshift barricade to fail now, especially with the wardstone's energy seeping through every crack and seam in the room. She could feel it, a wrongness that made her skin crawl and her teeth ache—something ancient and hungry that had no place in their world.
Silra emerged from the darkness, mirror clutched tightly in her hands. "Here!" she shouted, immediately moving to help Halie brace the door. Together they shoved the heavy glass panel into place, wedging it tight against the frame. But even as they worked, the building groaned around them—a long, slow creak that spoke of failing structural integrity.
"We need to get out of here," Silra said grimly, wiping sweat from her forehead with the back of one hand. "The whole floor's about to come down." Her eyes darted around the room, searching for any alternative exit—any way out that didn't involve walking straight into the wardstone's energy.
Jeane was already moving, her face set in a mask of concentration as she began weaving another spell. The air around her shimmered with barely contained power, her wings half-spread for balance as she channeled everything she had into maintaining the barrier between them and the darkness beyond. "I can hold it," she gasped, "but not for long. We need to move—now."
The wardstone pulsed again, a sickening wave of energy that made all three women stagger. Halie's burned hands screamed in protest as she fought to maintain her grip on the barricade. Silra felt her stomach lurch, bile rising in her throat at the sheer wrongness of it all.
"We're running out of time," Jeane snarled, her voice tight with strain. "Move your asses!"
Halie nodded, teeth gritted against the pain in her hands. "Where?" she demanded, already scanning the room for options. The floor was slick with water and lubricant, making footing treacherous at best.
Silra pointed to a section of wall that looked slightly less menacing than the rest. "There," she said, voice barely above a whisper. "I think I can feel air moving behind it—maybe a vent or something." She took a step forward, then another, boots sliding on the wet floor as she approached the wall.
Jeane's concentration wavered as another pulse hit them, and she dropped to one knee with a sharp intake of breath. The spell flickered dangerously for several seconds before she regained control, sweat beading on her forehead as she fought to maintain it. "Go!" she shouted at Silra and Halie. "I'll hold this long enough for you to find something!"
Halie hesitated for only a moment before nodding sharply. She turned to Hera, who was huddled against the far wall looking terrified. "Stay close," she ordered, taking the girl's hand and pulling her into motion. Together they followed Silra across the slick floor, every step a struggle against gravity and the treacherous surface.
Silra reached the wall and began examining it frantically, running her hands over the smooth surface in search of any sign of an opening. Her fingers traced along a seam, then pressed hard—nothing happened. She moved to another section, repeating the process with growing desperation.
"Fuck," she muttered under her breath as yet another spot proved solid. The wardstone pulsed again, closer this time—Jeane's spell was weakening. She redoubled her efforts, fingers scrabbling across the wall like a woman searching for salvation in a drowning sea.
Behind them, Jeane was fighting a losing battle. Her breasts ached with the strain of containing the milk that refused to stop flowing, each pulse from the wardstone sending fresh waves of agony through her body. The spell flickered and wavered, her concentration shredding under the onslaught of pain and fear.
"Hurry!" she screamed, voice cracking with desperation. "I can't—fuck—I can't hold it much longer!"
Halie grabbed a heavy lamp from nearby and tossed it at the wall where Silra was searching. The ceramic shattered on impact, leaving a large crack in the plasterboard. With a grunt of effort, she slammed her shoulder against the weakened section—and the wall gave way with a satisfying crunch.
"Go!" she shouted, shoving Hera through the new opening before following herself. The corridor beyond was dark and narrow, but it led away from the wardstone's energy—anywhere was better than here right now.
Silra didn't need to be told twice. She scrambled through the hole just as another pulse hit, the sheer force of it making her cry out in pain as she stumbled into the darkness on the other side. Her hands met cold tile floor, and she pushed herself upright immediately, scanning for Jeane.
The sorcerer was still visible in the room beyond, kneeling on the floor with wings spread wide as she channeled every ounce of power to maintain the barrier. Her face was twisted with agony, teeth gritted as she fought against impossible odds.
"Jeane!" Silra shouted, already moving back toward her friend despite the obvious danger. "Come on—we found a way out!"
Jeane's head snapped up at the sound of Silra's voice, eyes blazing crimson in the dim light. For a moment, something ancient and terrifying flickered across her features—something that had nothing to do with the woman Silra knew.
"No," Jeane growled, her voice barely human. "I won't let it out. I can contain it."
The wardstone pulsed again, a wave of pure wrongness that made all three women stagger. Halie's burned hands screamed in protest as she fought to maintain her grip on the barricade. Silra felt her stomach lurch, bile rising in her throat at the sheer wrongness of it all.
