At dark corridor in New York high rise penthouse suite, the pressure shifts from waiting to immediate risk. The ward answers the party's presence with a fresh pulse through the stone and no one can mistake it for safety. The nearest sign of danger is now structural collapse imminent. Someone has to answer that change now.

Silra

Silra · Rogue

The wardstone pulses again, deeper this time—fucking thing knows we're trapped and it's enjoying it. The floor shifts underfoot; water rises from the busted shower, mixing with the lube someone knocked over during the initial panic. Not saying who. I don't do confessions in a collapsing building. Jeane's still at the door, channeling magic like she can hold back structural failure and demonic energy with sheer will alone. Her knuckles are white on the frame—she's bleeding again from the cut on her palm where she's gripping it. That thing needs healing, or she'll pass out before we get free of this damn corridor. Halie's got a decent plan: brace the door physically while keeping separate contact points for magic and wards both. Pragmatic as hell considering the alternatives, which are dying in the dark or getting wardstone-fucked trying to push through that shaft all at once. The problem is me. I'm supposed to go first through the shaft—alone—and try to find another way out while everyone else holds this barricade together with spit and prayer. Jeane's already given orders: "Get through that shaft now." Like it's a simple matter of crawling through a dark hole in a collapsing building when we have no idea what's on the other side. But I don't do grand heroics or sacrifice plays, either. If they want me to go first, fine—I'll take point and find us an exit. But I'm not doing it for anyone's noble death scene. I'm doing it because it's the most likely way we all survive—if I can find something before this place comes down entirely. "Fine," I say, moving toward the shaft opening. "But if there's a demon on the other side or the floor gives out under me, I'm coming back through that hole and pushing you all into it instead."

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane turns to Silra, her wings flexing in frustration at the slow progress through the shaft. "Move faster! That wardstone's pulses are getting stronger—feel how the stone itself is fighting against me now?" The dark corridor beyond the door seems to pulse with its own malevolent heartbeat, visible in the way the air shimmers and distorts. She keeps her palm pressed flat against the barrier, sweat beading on her forehead as she funnels spellwork into keeping it stable. "Hera, back away from there—one wrong move and you'll pull half this floor down with us." Her voice carries a dangerous edge despite trying to sound patient; Hera's fear is palpable and Jeane doesn't need that spreading through the group right now. The sorceress glances at Halie bracing the door beside her. "Good, separate contact points help—wardstone energy wants to crawl up my arm like it has claws." She grits her teeth against the sensation, demonic nature flaring with protective aggression even as she maintains human composure.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

The wardstone pulses again, harder this time—something alive down there answering our presence with intent. The stone under my hands trembles. I shift my weight against the door, feet slipping on the slick floor, water and spilled lubricant mixing into a treacherous film. "Jeane, I've got this," I say, voice steady despite the sweat stinging my eyes. "You focus on keeping that wardstone contained." The doorframe feels hot through my shirt, like leaning against a sunbaked wall in summer. But it's not heat—it's something else, wrong and hungry. I glance back at Hera crouched near the shower stall, watching with wide, terrified eyes. My chest tightens. I should tell her to move farther away, but if this door fails, I want her close enough to shield with my body. The wardstone pulses again, a sickening rhythm that makes my teeth ache. Jeane's cursing under her breath tells me she feels it too—whatever ancient thing sleeps beneath us is waking up, stretching its attention toward the surface. I lean more of my weight against the door, feeling the wood groan. "Silra," I call out to where the elf's voice echoes from the shaft, "hurry! We can't hold this much longer." My arms are burning now, not just from heat but from something else— wards don't like being pushed back. The building shudders around us, a long, slow groan of stressed metal and cracking concrete. Dust sifts down from the ceiling in a fine rain. I dig my heels into the floor, trying to find purchase on the wet, greasy surface. "Hera," I say, keeping my voice low so only she can hear, "if this door gives way, grab onto me. Don't let go, no matter what." She nods, fear and something else—trust maybe?—flashing across her face. My stomach twists with a feeling that has nothing to do with the wardstone. The stone under my hands pulses again, harder this time. Whatever's down there is getting stronger, fed by Jeane's magic and our own desperation. I push back with everything I have, feeling the sweat soak through my clothes, the burn in my muscles. "We're running out of time," I mutter to no one in particular. The wardstone pulses once more, a threat or a promise—I'm not sure which. But either way, we can't stay here much longer.
