The building's groan shifts tone from complaint to warning—louder now, more immediate. Dust sifts down in a thick gray rain that tastes like fear and stone, coating everything in the corridor. Jeane doesn't hesitate; she snaps out the spell word sharp enough to cut through the groaning wood, voice barely containing the panic fighting to break free. "Silra," she bites out, "get through that shaft now." Her eyes flick to Halie's pale face—pale even in the emergency lighting—and the way her hands grip the wall for balance despite how they burn from residual contact with the wardstone. The spell holding the barricade barely contains the thing beyond; every pulse makes the wood creak and the stone vibrate.

Silra works the shaft opening wider, metal screeching against stone in a sound that grates on nerves already frayed thin by terror. "Fuck," she mutters, "this is too small—no way we all fit through here." The wardstone pulses again—louder this time—and dust rains from above in a thick gray cloud that tastes like fear and stone. Jeane doesn't hesitate; she snaps out the spell word sharp enough to cut through the building's groan, voice barely containing the panic fighting to break free. "Silra," she bites out, "get through that shaft now." Her eyes flick to Halie's pale face—pale even in the emergency lighting—and the way her hands grip the wall for balance despite how they burn from residual contact with the wardstone.

Halie presses her back against the opposite wall, trying to give Silra space while maintaining pressure on the door. The wardstone pulses again—harder this time—and she feels it through the wood, a vibration that sinks into bone. "Jeane," she says, voice strained, "I've got this. You focus on keeping that wardstone contained." Her hands burn where they touch the barrier, skin reddening and blistering even through her clothes. The spell holding the barricade wavers with each pulse; she can feel the thing beyond pushing back, testing the magical seams.

The corridor darkens further as power surges through Jeane's wings—demonic energy responding to the wardstone's call. She grits her teeth, fighting to maintain control over both spell and nature. "Just get through," she hisses at Silra. "I can't hold this much longer." The wood around them creaks ominously; water seeps through cracks in the ceiling, mixing with what's already flooding out of the broken shower stall. The air grows thick with the scent of fear and sex and decay.

Silra works frantically, sweat stinging her eyes as she widens the shaft opening. "This is fucking impossible," she snarls, voice echoing off the close walls. "We need another way out—now." The wardstone pulses again—louder—and dust pours down like gray snow. Jeane's spell flickers; Halie has to throw her weight against the door to keep it in place. The thing beyond is getting stronger, feeding on their fear and desperation.

Jeane's eyes flash crimson as she channels more power into the barrier spell. "Not another way out," she growls, voice distorted by the strain of containing both wardstone energy and demonic nature. "We go through here—all of us." Her wings beat once in agitation, stirring up the thick air. "Move faster, Silra. I won't be able to hold this much longer."

Halie's hands scream with pain but she doesn't let up on the door. The wardstone energy is seeping through now—not just pulses but a constant vibration that makes her teeth ache. "Jeane," she gasps, "I can't—" Another pulse hits and she cries out, body convulsing from the force of it. The spell wavers dangerously; Jeane snarls something in a language that shouldn't exist and slams both palms against the barrier.

Silra freezes as the shaft widens enough for her to squeeze through. "Fuck," she breathes, looking back at Halie's convulsing form and Jeane's straining figure. "We're fucked either way." The building groans like a dying beast; wood cracks somewhere overhead. She doesn't hesitate—dives into the shaft just as another wardstone pulse hits, the force of it nearly knocking her backward.

Jeane catches Halie before she collapses, wings wrapping around them both in a desperate embrace. The barrier spell shatters with a sound like glass breaking; the door explodes inward, revealing the dark corridor beyond and the pulsing wardstone at its center. "HOLD ON," Jeane screams, and then they're falling through the shaft after Silra, magic and adrenaline keeping them from splintering apart on the way down.

The world spins as they crash onto concrete below—the sub-basement level, miraculously intact so far. Jeane rolls to protect Halie from the impact, wings wrapping around them both like a living shield. When she looks up, Silra is already on her feet nearby, dusty and bruised but alive. Behind them, the shaft gap reveals nothing but darkness and the fading echoes of collapsing floors.

Halie pushes herself upright, hands raw and bleeding, entire body screaming from the fall and residual wardstone corruption. "What... what now?" she gasps, voice hoarse with pain and lingering terror.

Jeane stands slowly, wings folding tight against her back as she surveys their surroundings—a concrete corridor lined with rusted pipes and industrial equipment, emergency lights casting everything in sickly yellow-green shadows. Her eyes gleam crimson for a moment before settling back to human red. "Now," she says, voice cold with barely contained rage, "we find out what the fuck that thing was—and why it wanted us so badly."
