Round 55

Phase: converging

The wardstone pulses again, faster now—five seconds between each ominous thud. The building groans in response, like an ancient beast waking from slumber. Hera trembles against Jeane, her fear a palpable thing, and she finds herself torn between frustration at Silra's methods and a perverse thrill at the situation's escalating danger.
"Silra," Jeane snaps, her voice sharp enough to cut through the building's creaking timbers, "if you don't overload this wardstone's sensors with chaos in the next sixty seconds, we're all going down with this fucking building."
I shake my head vigorously, my long chestnut hair whipping around my face as I try to make sense of Jeane's demand. "No, no, there has to be another way! We can't just--I mean, what even is 'chaos' in this context? Is that some kind of code for something else?"
My voice rises in pitch, edged with panic and confusion. I glance around the room, my hazel eyes wide and pleading as I look to the others for support. "Please, someone tell me this is all a big misunderstanding. That there's a loophole or a way out that doesn't involve..."
Silra's fingers twitch for a toolkit that doesn't exist here—no lockpicks, no wire, nothing to short-circuit this metaphysical bomb ticking above their heads. The wardstone isn't asking for poetry, love. It wants proof of life, and not the kind we're used to giving.
She looks at Jeane's flushed face, then at Hera's trembling hands. Chaos means breaking something designed to be whole. And right now, this building is holding on by its architectural teeth. Silra steps closer to the wardstone, her teal eyes calculating the odds of success against the certainty of collapse.
"Fine," Jeane growls, her patience snapping like a taut wire. "If you won't do it, I will." She raises her hands, dark energy crackling between her fingertips—destructive magic held in check by sheer force of will.
I stumble backward, my heart pounding against my ribs. "Wait! You can't just—" The words die on my lips as the wardstone pulses again, the building shuddering violently around us. A loud crack echoes from somewhere overhead—a support beam giving way.
Silra's voice cuts through the creaking timber with cold precision. "Jeane, stop. Your magic will only make things worse. We need controlled chaos, not uncontrolled destruction." She turns to me, her expression a mix of urgency and something almost like apology. "Hera, I'm sorry it has to be this way, but we're out of time. The building won't hold much longer."
I find myself trapped between two women—one offering a terrifying solution, the other demanding my cooperation in something that goes against every instinct I possess.
