Round 31

Phase: escalating

The corridor's geometry shifted again, walls rippling inward before snapping back into place with wet sounds. The air tasted of ozone and something else—something ancient and hungry. Silra extended her perception tools against the wall surface. "Fuck me sideways... these aren't just organic—they're reacting to our presence specifically." She demonstrated, watching intently as the material pulsed faster when she moved her hand closer. "This isn't passive distortion—it's active surveillance. We're being studied as much as we're exploring here."
Jeane shifted her stance, rapier still raised but now aimed more toward the walls than Aethera. "Studied and possibly... " Her eyes narrowed as she watched another ripple pass through the material. "Those fluid pockets forming and collapsing—are we being tasted?" She looked to Halie. "If this is a digestive tract, then what's at the other end? And more importantly, how do we get back out without becoming..." She trailed off, unwilling to finish the thought.
Halie moved closer to examine Silra's tools against the wall surface, her holy symbol held ready. "This isn't natural biology—it's something far older and stranger." She paused, brow furrowing. "The cellular structure is... impossible according to anything I've studied in theology or anatomy." She turned back to the group. "We need more information before proceeding further. Aethera—if you can provide any details about how this happened, it could save us all from whatever's happening to..."
The walls began to pulse faster, a low rumble building beneath their feet.
Silra yanked her tools back and took a step away from the wall. "Shit—shit—I think we pissed it off." Her rapier came up fully now, pointed directly at the nearest ripple. "Everyone, watch for those fluid pockets—they're not just sampling anymore if that reaction is any indication."
Jeane matched Silra's stance, her own blade aimed at the wall. "If this thing's hostile, we need to know what kind of attack pattern to expect." She glanced at Halie and Aethera. "Stay close together—if it tries to split us up, that's exactly what it wants."
Halie moved back toward Silra and Jeane, positioning herself between them with Aethera behind her. "I can try a smite prayer if it comes at us directly—but against something this ancient and powerful? It might just make us more noticeable." Her eyes scanned the walls constantly. "We need to find an exit or a way to..." She trailed off as another ripple passed through, closer than before.
The rumbling intensified, and suddenly a section of wall began to bulge outward, stretching thin before bursting open in a spray of viscous fluid.
Silra fired off her crossbow without hesitation at the burst point, bolts sinking into what emerged—a mass of writhing tendrils tipped with what looked like... teeth? "FUCK! Everyone back! This thing's got appendages now!"
Jeane launched a firebolt at the same moment as Silra, her spell igniting several of the tendrils mid-extension. "Burn, you cosmic asshole!" She shouted, already backing away while maintaining her aim on the mass. "Halie, get Aethera behind that corner—now!"
Halie grabbed Aethera's arm and hauled her toward the junction where corridor met main room, using her body to shield hers. "Stay down and stay quiet—this isn't the time for heroics." She muttered a quick prayer for protection, feeling the holy energy surge around them. "I'll try to stabilize this section if we can get enough distance..."
The tendrils continued to emerge, more fluid spraying outward as they extended into the corridor.
Silra rapid-fired her crossbow while backing toward the junction, each bolt finding its mark in the mass of thrashing appendages. "This is so far beyond our pay grade—I'm rethinking every life choice that led me here!" She glanced back to make sure Halie and Aethera were clear before focusing on covering fire.
Jeane unleashed another firebolt, then a third, each spell adding to the growing inferno consuming the tendrils. "You wanted us to explore? Well, we're exploring the shit out of this situation now!" She shouted between spells, her wings beating for added lift and distance from the creature.
Halie pressed Aethera against the wall and began a series of gestures with her free hand, holy symbol held tight. "By the light of purity, grant us sanctuary from this profane intrusion!" A shimmering field began to form, expanding outward from their position.
The creature's howl echoed through the corridor—a sound like tearing metal and shattering glass.
Silra dove around the corner just as a massive tendril slammed into the floor where she was standing moments before. "Holy fuck—that thing's got an anger problem!" She scrambled to her feet, rapier already searching for angles of attack.
Jeane rounded the corner with a burst of speed, immediately pressing her back to the wall and aiming past Silra at the corridor junction. "Anyone hurt? Good. Now—Halie, how long does that barrier hold?" She began casting a different spell, her hands moving in complex patterns. "Because I'm running low on 'fuck you' spells and these tendrils aren't getting any less teethy."
The shimmering field solidified around them, visible only as a slight distortion in the air. "It should hold for..." Halie consulted her divine knowledge "...at least an hour under normal conditions. But against something this powerful? I'd say maybe fifteen minutes before it starts to fail."
The rumbling from below intensified, and the entire corridor seemed to vibrate.
"Fifteen minutes to come up with a plan that doesn't involve 'die horribly in a cosmic stomach.'" Great. Silra leaned out briefly to loose another crossbow bolt at anything visible, then pulled back. "Anyone have any ideas that don't involve charging a tendril monster with teeth?"
Jeane leaned out and launched two more firebolts, then pulled back. "Ideas are great—let's hear them after I thin out its numbers a bit more." She muttered an arcane phrase and her eyes began to glow crimson. "Time for some area-of-effect destruction..."
Halie moved closer to Aethera, keeping the barrier maintained. "While Jeane keeps it occupied, we need to understand what we're up against." Aethera—if you can provide any insight into this entity's nature or weaknesses...
The creature screamed again, louder this time, and something massive began to push against Halie's barrier.
Silra ready her rapier, eyes darting between the barrier and Jeane. "If that thing breaks through before we have a plan, we're all tendril chow." Anyone spot any obvious escape routes or weak points in its structure?"
Jeane leaned out again, this time unleashing a wide-area fireblast down the corridor. "Burn in hell, you cosmic abomination!" The flames roared outward, consuming everything in their path—but the creature merely roared louder and pushed harder against the barrier.
Halie struggled to maintain the barrier as another impact rocked them. "We need options now! Something that doesn't involve standing here waiting to be digested!"
A low rumble began to build from somewhere deeper in the building.
Jeane paused her spellcasting, head tilted in concentration. "That's not our tendril friend—that's something else." She exchanged a glance with Silra. "Great. Just when we thought things couldn't get worse—now we've got a cosmic double feature."
Halie redoubled her efforts on the barrier, sweat beading on her forehead. "I can feel it—the power in this place is..." She gasped as another impact rocks them. "...concentrating somewhere else." Whatever that rumble is, it's not good news.
Silra pressed her ear to the wall, trying to pinpoint the direction. "It's coming from below—deeper in the building." She straightened up. "If this place is literally alive and digesting us, then whatever's waking up downstairs might be..." She trailed off, not wanting to finish the thought.
Jeane began casting a different spell, her hands moving in complex patterns. "Fine. We've established that everything wants to eat us and the situation is getting worse." She began casting a different spell, her hands moving in complex patterns. "Time for some recon—silent and invisible."
Halie watched Jeane's body remain motionless as the spell took shape, the energy crackling around it. "Do whatever you're doing quickly—I'm not sure how much longer this will hold against that kind of force." She glanced at Aethera. "Any insight from you? Anything about what's happening downstairs?"
"Wait." Silra froze mid-sentence. "Does anyone else hear that?" A low rumble began to build from somewhere deeper in the building.
Jeane completed the spell with a soft pop, her consciousness splitting—her physical body remained frozen in place while an ethereal version of herself phased through the wall. I'll be back in ten minutes max—or when something kills the physical me. Whichever comes first.
Halie focused every ounce of energy into maintaining the barrier, her hands shaking with effort. "Be careful—if that thing breaches the barrier while you're..." The rumbling from below stopped abruptly, replaced by a sound like stone grinding against stone.
"What was that?" Silra moved closer to Halie and Aethera. "Not good. Not good at all." She edged toward the barrier's edge, rapier held ready. "If this thing gets through, we need a plan beyond 'fight.' Anyone spot any alternate corridors or—" She froze mid-sentence. "Wait. Does anyone else hear that?"
Jeane's ethereal form phased back through the wall just in time to witness the teleportation explosion. Wait—what the fuck? I missed the entire...
The world shifted violently, and she found herself materializing in what appeared to be... a broom closet?
Silra stumbled as reality warped around her, the familiar sensation of teleportation magic pulling at her senses. Wherever we are, it's not digestive tract material—small victories. She looked around quickly, taking in their new surroundings.
Halie collapsed to her knees as the spell released her, gasping for breath. "Success... but I won't be able to do that again for at least an hour." Maybe more.
Silra helped Halie steady herself while scanning the room. We're in some kind of service corridor— Maintenance? Storage? Either way, it's solid walls and no visible tendrils. She moved to the door and listened carefully. I don't hear anything... major. Yet.
Halie leaned against the wall, still catching her breath. Aethera—are you alright? Anyone injured in the teleportation?
Aethera nodded weakly, her form still flickering but steadier than before.
Silra checked her equipment quickly. Weapons intact, no visible damage. But we're cut off from Jeane now—any ideas how to find her without wandering into more trouble?
