Round 221

Phase: escalating

The ancient stone chamber felt like it was alive, pulsing with an energy that had nothing to do with electricity or modern science. The bioluminescent plants lining the walls cast a soft, ethereal glow that should have been comforting but instead seemed ominous—each shadow they threw across the stone looked like grasping fingers reaching for escape. Water lapped gently against the submerged foundation, a sound that had lulled many to their doom before.
Jeane stood at the edge of the watery abyss, her crimson eyes fixed on the massive glowing figure hovering just beneath the surface. The creature moved with an otherworldly grace, cutting through the water as if it were air—her presence alone seemed to bend the laws of physics. Every instinct screamed at Jeane to run, to get as far away from this place and this being as possible.
But running wasn't an option—not when Abby was here. The petite human woman stood a few feet away, her wide brown eyes fixed on the struggle playing out before her. She looked terrified but determined—Jeane had come to expect nothing less from her companion. They'd been through hell together already; this was just another circle.
A skeletal hand closed around Jeane's ankle like a vise, bone grating against bone. She bit back a scream, focusing every ounce of will into maintaining the barrier between them and the horde of dust-figures that still lurked in the shadows. Abbs—her voice came out strangled—grab that thing! Use your weight!
Abby didn't hesitate. She spotted the chunk of fallen pillar Jeane had indicated—a massive piece of stone that looked heavy enough to crush a small car, let alone a brittle skeleton—and launched herself at it with desperate determination. The stone shifted under her efforts, rolling forward with a grating sound that echoed through the chamber.
It came to rest mere feet from the skeletal horror still clutching Jeane's ankle—a makeshift weapon, crude but effective. The creature paused, its eyeless sockets seeming to focus on the new threat. Jeane felt a surge of pride mixed with terror—Abby was proving herself again, finding strength when there seemed to be none left.
The glowing woman in the water watched the exchange with what looked like curiosity, her head tilted at an angle that no human could manage. Her attention shifted between them and the skeletal threat, assessing. They were both frozen now, caught between the horror below and the enigma above. The chamber's energy seemed to intensify around them, the bioluminescent plants pulsing brighter as if feeding off the tension.
The water lapped a little louder against the stone—another reminder that their time here was limited.
