Phase: escalating

The shadow creature lunges at Aethera—its hunger palpable—but Jeane's magic thorns strike first. The thing recoils with a shriek that echoes through the corridor. "What do you want?" Halie demands, her divine light flickering as she steps forward to shield Aethera.
Zha'thik's roars are growing louder below.
The shadow guardian materializes more clearly—a twisted figure of writhing darkness—its voice a chorus of whispers. "I am bound here," it hisses. "Guardian of this place... until she came." Its tendrils reach for Aethera again, but Jeane's magic flares between them.
"Aethera changed the boundaries," the creature continues, ignoring the interruption. "Freed something inside me... or trapped me further." Its eyes fix on Aethera—hungry and calculating.
Jeane's wings flare wide—stone scraping against leather—as she moves to flank Halie. "Your purpose?" she demands.
The shadow guardian tilts its head—an almost human gesture that chills the blood—and speaks slowly. "I was created to maintain boundaries between realms," it explains, each word deliberate. "To ensure certain knowledge remains sealed away." The floor shakes with Zha'thik's rage below.
Aethera steps forward despite Halie's protective stance—the magical binding between them pulses with desperate energy. "What knowledge?" she asks sharply.
The creature's form ripples unnaturally as it considers her question. When it speaks again, its voice carries an undertone of something almost like... hunger?
"The secrets I guard are ancient and forbidden," it begins slowly. "Methods for breaking boundaries between realms..."
Jeane's interest sharpens—her wings twitching. "Reality manipulation?" she repeats, her voice sharp.
The shadow guardian tilts its head again—the unsettling human gesture—and hisses, "Freed, I can return to my true purpose. Bound, I am unstable... dangerous even to myself."
Jeane's expression shifts from suspicion to calculation as she listens. She lowers her hands—the spell dissipating with a soft crackle—and takes a step forward alongside Halie.
"Your true purpose?" Jeane asks slowly.
The creature solidifies further—shadow coalescing into a more distinct humanoid shape—and its voice gains clarity. "Maintain boundaries between realms," it explains, each word carefully enunciated. "Ensure certain knowledge remains sealed."
Aethera's eyes widen at the implications. Before she can respond, Zha'thik's roar shakes the very stone beneath them—the sound of something massive breaking through.
"We don't have time for this!" Jeane snarls. "Zha'thik is breaking through!"
"Aethera changed everything," the guardian continues, ignoring the interruption. "When she arrived, the boundaries shifted."
Aethera steps forward despite Halie's protective stance—the binding between them pulsing with desperate energy. "How did I change things?" she demands.
The creature considers her question—its form rippling unnaturally—before speaking in a voice that carries hunger. "The knowledge I guard is ancient and forbidden," it begins slowly. "Secrets of reality manipulation..."
