As Halie holds up the holy water, a sudden jolt of energy surges through the chamber, causing the shelves to rattle and the air to shimmer. The grinding sound from the rear wall grows louder, and the dark tendril bursting forth from the floor crack now writhes like a living thing, its shadowy form seeping into the room. The hooded figure at the junction raises a hand, palm up, as if to halt the creature's advance, but its presence only seems to fuel the energy coursing through the air. The warding field around Hera begins to falter, its brilliant red glow dying to a faint, pulsating light. Jeane's eyes widen in alarm, her hands still raised in a desperate attempt to maintain the barrier. The air is thick with anticipation, and the leather-bound tome on the pedestal now pulses with an otherworldly energy that seems to be drawing the party members toward it. A low, rasping whisper echoes through the chamber, seeming to come from all directions at once: "You should not have meddled."

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I feel my concentration slip for just an instant—that grinding sound from the rear wall is getting louder, and now there's some kind of shadow tendril thing writhing through the chamber. The ward symbols on the walls are flickering worse; I'm maintaining them with pure willpower right now which means they'll fail completely in maybe forty seconds. Halie is still in that supply chamber—I can hear her moving around but haven't seen what she found yet. Behind me, Hera is contained within my barrier spell but clearly terrified and unable to help. The hooded figure has moved closer and just did something that made the shadow tendril stop advancing for a second—which means they have influence over it somehow, either control or mutual interest? That's more information than I want right now because either way, intervening with them introduces another variable into an already unstable situation. But if they're trying to help or at least not immediately hostile, then letting them assist might give us enough breathing room for Halie to find something useful—or for me to recover enough magical reserves to actually fight effectively. The tome on the pedestal is now pulsing with energy and seems to be drawing everyone's attention toward it—that's definitely the source of all this but destroying it while shadow creatures are manifesting might just release whatever energy into the room freely instead of contained. And then that disembodied voice echoes through the chamber: "You should not have meddled."

I can barely keep both containment barriers stable now—the one around Hera and the emergency ward over floor crack are draining what little magical reserves I have left. If either collapses, we're immediately fighting something physical and probably fast in a confined space with no backup. Behind me, Halie calls out: "Found holy water!" which is exactly what we need but she's still got to get back through this chamber and past the shadow tendril without getting grabbed or possessed—and I'm positioned wrong to protect her movement path while maintaining current wards.

The hooded figure stands maybe twenty feet away now, watching everything with that unsettling stillness. If they're actually offering help here, then letting them reinforce my wards might buy me enough time to position myself better for whatever's coming next—but trusting someone I know nothing about in a situation like this is monumentally stupid. Still… options are limited and time is running out. I turn my head slightly toward the hooded figure while keeping primary magical focus on maintaining both barriers: "If you're offering assistance, reinforce that floor ward! I can't hold it much longer!" My voice cracks with exhaustion despite effort to sound commanding. The ward symbols across the walls flicker again—thirty seconds maybe before they collapse completely. If whoever's under that hood actually helps instead of just watching us struggle, then great. If they're setting some kind of trap or testing me somehow, well… I'll deal with that when it happens. Right now, potential help is better than certain doom. (Throwing out verbal request for ward reinforcement while maintaining current magical load.)

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I clutch the bottle of holy water tightly—the liquid inside seems to pulse with its own energy, responding to the darkness filling this chamber. The grinding sound from deeper in here is getting louder, and now there's some kind of shadow tendril thing writhing through the room beyond. Focus Halie focus I need to get back out there with this water before whatever's manifesting fully—but walking past that creature means exposing myself without magical protection. Jeane is barely keeping everything contained; her voice when she called out sounded thin and strained even through exhaustion. I step toward the chamber entrance, holding the holy water bottle ready—if I can splash it onto that tendril or at least create some kind of barrier between us, maybe that'll disrupt whatever's happening. The stone beneath my feet vibrates with that same dark energy I felt earlier in the ritual chamber, only stronger now. Behind me, deeper within this supply room, something shifts—the grinding sound intensifies for a moment before settling back into its low rumble.

The air outside the threshold tastes wrong somehow, thick and heavy like breathing underwater. Through the doorway, I can see Jeane maintaining her containment barriers with visible effort—the magical symbols around Hera are flickering ominously—and that hooded figure has moved closer while some shadow tendril thing writhes between them all. If I just stand here thinking about it, we lose whatever opening this holy water might provide. My hands shake as I take another step forward—fear and adrenaline both warring in my chest. "I've got the holy water!" I call out, voice barely steady despite effort at command.* "Moving to position for splash disruption!"

(Preparing to step fully into ritual chamber, holding holy water bottle ready.)
