Round 91

Phase: escalating

The staircase groaned ominously, wood splintering with each protest. A section of the floor gave way, revealing a narrow corridor beyond—a dark throat opening in the structure itself. The air thickened with malevolence from the hidden book on the worktable, its energy palpable and wrong.
Silra stood at the edge, teal eyes flickering between Halie and Jeane as she maintained her shield spell despite obvious discomfort. "Four seconds? That's asking for a miracle even on a good day," she said, voice strained. "And with this stomach distension throwing off my internal timing, it's more like six seconds minimum."
Jeane stood across the unstable binding threads, crimson eyes scanning the magical connection between them all. She maintained her own containment field with visible effort, wings shifting restlessly behind her back. "I understand the risk," she replied, voice tight. "But we don't have the luxury of perfection right now—we need to act fast or face whatever's descending these stairs without proper preparation."
Halie watched them both, blue-grey eyes sharp despite the obvious paralysis of suspicion. "I hear Silra's assessment of the risk," she said slowly, "and I see Jeane's calculated acceptance of it." She adjusted her emergency containment field components again, golden light flickering ominously. "But here’s what my clerical experience confirms: absolute commitment doesn’t mean ignoring obvious liabilities—it means working around them through alternative strategy."
The staircase creaked louder, a living thing resisting their presence. The entity at the top seemed to pause, testing the air for weaknesses in their resolve—or perhaps savoring the moment before descending.
