Round 67

Phase: escalating

The magical binding pulsed between them like a living thing, each beat sending a fresh wave of wrongness through their bodies. Halie's spell had backfired spectacularly—rather than shielding them, her holy energy had only served to awaken the ancient artifact further. The music box's runes flared brighter now, pulsing in time with the binding's rhythm as its humming grew more insistent.
Jeane circled to maintain a clear view of both women and the ominous container, her wings beating with barely contained panic. "This is exactly what I warned against," she hissed under her breath, more to herself than anyone else. "Rushed action based on misplaced heroism rather than actual strategic assessment." The runes pulsed faster now—responding almost actively to Halie's protection spell.
Silra took an instinctive step back from the artifact despite her rogue's natural inclination toward investigation over caution. "Shit," she muttered, her hand tightening around the dagger hilt as she felt the binding flare between them again. "So we're not just dealing with a trapped entity here, we're also serving it up on a silver platter via magical stupidity? Fantastic." Her eyes narrowed as she assessed the situation—Jeane's wings crackling with power now while Halie stood frozen in mortified realization.
Halie's protective magic fizzled out completely as she finally understood her mistake. "Jeane's right—I didn't realize..." Her voice trailed off, shame mixing with lingering confusion about how she could've misjudged something so fundamentally. She moved to position herself between the ominous box and the others—not for protection this time, but to physically block Silra from rushing in again. "Wait," she said firmly, her blue-grey eyes meeting Silra's teal ones with equal parts concern and authority.
The air around them seemed to thicken with each pulse of the binding magic and the responding energy from the artifact. Something ancient and hungry was stirring within that ornate container—something that now regarded them with predatory interest thanks to Halie's unintended feeding.
