In the rain-soaked house, a lone figure moved cautiously down the narrow stairs, the iron poker held ready in both hands. The air was heavy with the scent of mold and gunpowder, growing stronger with each step. The wooden treads creaked beneath her weight, echoing through the stairwell like a heartbeat in the darkness. Behind her, the rain pattered against the window, a sound that might conceal any noise she made.
As she reached the bottom of the stairs, a figure emerged from the kitchen doorway, its slow and deliberate movements casting a shadow on the wall. The lamp's glow cast an eerie light on the scene, making the darkness seem to press in from all sides. The figure's presence was unmistakable, and Jeane stood frozen, her grip on the poker tightening as she assessed the threat. Her heart hammered in her chest, but she remained still, unsure whether to descend further or wait for the intruder to make its next move.
The figure took another step forward, its movements eerily silent in the rain-soaked night. Jeane's eyes narrowed, her mind racing with possibilities. She knew every inch of this house, but the intruder seemed to be one step ahead. The air was thick with tension, and Jeane's hand hovered over the knife she had tucked against her waist. The storm outside seemed to be intensifying, the wind howling through the trees like a chorus of warning.
