In the heart of the lonely modern house, where darkness seemed to writhe like a living entity, a faint creaking echoed through the empty halls. The sound was a siren's call, drawing Jeane from her solitary vigil to the kitchen doorway. Her eyes, aglow with a fierce determination, locked onto the narrow hall beyond, the stairwell hidden from view like a secret passage. The air was heavy with tension as she checked each corner and shadow, her gaze lingering on the faint creaking sound that had drawn her attention. The knife drawer beckoned, its contents a potential lifeline in this desperate standoff.
Jeane's voice sliced through the darkness as she addressed the unknown intruder, her tone steady despite the adrenaline surge. "I know you're there," she called out, her words echoing off the walls. The response was silence, but the creaking grew louder, more insistent. Jeane gripped the iron poker tightly, the cold metal a solid promise in her hands. Her heels clicked sharply on the wooden floor as she moved toward the kitchen doorway, the lamp's glow barely cutting through the shadows ahead.
The Force moved with calculated precision, her footsteps silent as she descended into the darkness below. She checked the lamp on the side table: heavy brass base, solid. The narrow hall to the kitchen and back door offered a clear path, but the stairwell was blind. She picked up the lamp by the neck, swing it once, feel the weight. The creaking from below intensified—someone was definitely moving around down there now. Jeane's eyes locked onto the kitchen doorway, her heart pounding in anticipation.
