Round 1 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The front sitting room was shrouded in darkness, the only light emanating from the brass lamp on the side table beside Jeane's upholstered chair. The cold fireplace crackled with a faint, dying ember, casting a dim glow over the space. The iron poker leaned against the wall, its heavy base a stark contrast to the lamp's delicate form. A ceramic ashtray sat atop the coffee table, its empty surface a testament to Jeane's absent habits. The room's walls seemed to close in around her, their wooden panels bearing the faint scent of pine and damp earth. The narrow hall to the kitchen, stairwell, and back door was a dark, uninviting presence, a reminder that escape was not an option. The rain-streaked windows on every side of the room offered no respite from the night, their panes etched with a fine latticework of water droplets. Jeane slumped forward, her elbows resting on her knees as she stared blankly into the flames. Her fingers drummed a slow, restless beat on the armrest of her chair. The silence was oppressive, punctuated only by the occasional creak of the old house and the distant hoot of an owl in the woods. In the darkness beneath the house, a faint, muffled movement echoed through the walls, a sound that seemed to vibrate through every molecule of air. It was a slow, deliberate step, followed by another, and another. The footsteps drew closer, their steady rhythm a counterpoint to Jeane's frantic heartbeats.
The lamp's metal base is heavy and solid in my hand, better than nothing. I move toward the narrow hallway to the kitchen where the knives are—the house keys still hang on their hook right there, a reminder of how easily this place can become a trap. The floorboards creak underfoot, too loud. Rain pounds the windows like gunshots.
The house is dark and still inside, the rain a steady drumming against the windows. The front sitting room feels empty but that means nothing yet—the house has corners, closets, hiding spaces. She checks the upholstered chair first with the muzzle of her handgun: nobody there. The side table holds a heavy brass lamp, something useful if needed. Her other handgun stays loose at her side. She moves toward the narrow hallway leading deeper into the house—toward the kitchen with its knives, the stairwell to the bedrooms above, the back door and its escape routes. Her boots are quiet on the floorboards. She listens hard for any sound that doesn't belong: breathing, movement, the creak of a floorboard somewhere else in the structure. The house breathes around her, old wood settling. She stops at the hallway's edge, back against the wall, and scans the kitchen ahead with the flashlight beam: countertops, sink, stove, cabinets under the counters. The beam sweeps across the room, finding nothing immediately out of place—no person crouched there waiting, no obvious threat. But that doesn't mean it's clear. The darkness past the light's edge could hold anything. She takes a step into the hallway proper, exposing herself slightly. Her eyes adjust to the gloom while her ears strain for any sound beyond the rain outside. The house remains quiet and still, which either means it's empty or someone inside is very good at not making noise. She doesn't like either option.
