The spell crackles with wrongness, Seraphine's fingers tracing sigils that bleed light into shadow. The ward-stones shudder, their hunger stuttering—but the connection doesn't sever cleanly. Instead, it convulses, sending a feedback loop screeching back up the tower's throat. The entity upstairs responds not with subtlety but with an eruption of pure force. The wall of the tower bulges outward, stone groaning like stressed bone, and something massive begins to press through from the other side. The window frames itself around a shape too large and wrong for any mortal silhouette, and eyes—too many eyes—open in the darkness beyond.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's eyes dart between the thickening shadow and Jeane's urgent command. Her fingers twitch at her sides, caught between the instinct to flee and the knowledge that the Time-Splitting Sword awaits within those crumbling walls. "Alright, alright, I'm moving!" she hisses, scurrying back to the wall window. "But if whatever's upstairs comes down here, you're on your own!"

She peers through the opening, crossbow at the ready, scanning for any signs of movement or new threats. The tower's interior is even more ominous up close - dark stone, eerie silence, and a palpable sense of danger lurking just beyond sight. "Varrika, get that mace ready," Merrin whispers urgently to her fellow adventurer. "Whatever we're dealing with, it won't be pretty."

Her mind races as she tries to calculate their best course of action. The wards are clearly active and feeding on something - or someone - within the tower. But backing away now, after coming so close to their goal, feels like abandoning their quest entirely. She takes a deep breath, steeling herself for what comes next. "Jeane, Seraphine - whatever you're planning, do it quick. We don't have much time left before that thing comes down here."

Her halfling ears strain for any sound of approaching danger as she readies her weapons and prepares to face the unknown. Whatever lies within those walls, Merrin knows one thing for certain: their journey has only just begun.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I grip my mace tighter, feeling its weight settle in my callused palm. The wards' desperate gulping makes my stomach turn. Whatever's feeding upstairs, it ain't human. Merrin peeks through the window, crossbow ready. I step closer, keeping watch. If whatever's in there decides to drop by for a visit, we'll be ready. "Alright, halfling," I growl under my breath. "What've you got?"

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I feel a cold sweat bead on my brow as I watch the wards convulse around us. The feedback loop of dark energy is a physical thing, a pressure against my skin that makes every hair stand on end. This isn't just a defensive mechanism anymore—it's screaming with pain or rage, or something far worse. My mind races through the arcane texts I've studied, searching for any mention of a ward system this aggressive, this... predatory. Nothing fits. The magic here is beyond what I've read about, beyond even what I feared we might face.
I turn to Merrin and Varrika, my voice low and strained but firm. "We need to move now. Whatever this thing is upstairs, it knows we're here." I gesture for them to follow me back towards the tower entrance, my steps quickening into a brisk march. We can't wait any longer—the wards are failing, the entity is awake, and time is our enemy as much as whatever monster lurks within those walls.
