Phase: converging

The tower's ancient stone exhaled dust and decay as the wards fed, each pulse sending a fresh wave of corruption across the ground outside. Seraphine felt it like teeth on her skin—her elven magic was no match for this kind of predatory arcane hunger. She finished her whispered analysis, silver holy symbol clutched tight between her fingers.
"Jeane," she called out, voice barely above a whisper but carrying the weight of urgency, "get down. Now. The wards are synchronized with something inside—they're not just barriers anymore." Her sharp eyes fixed on the tower's facade where Jeane had disappeared moments ago, then flickered back to the uppermost window where a shadow lingered too long in the gloom.
"Whatever's chained up there," Seraphine continued, already gathering her spell components with practiced efficiency, "it's awake now. The wards are feeding off its... presence? Energy? I don't know what it is exactly, but it's not natural." She began tracing sigils of protection in the air between them, each gesture precise despite her trembling fingers.
"Halie," she hissed toward the cover of the nearby boulders where their cleric was preparing a ward-clearing spell, "status update. We have maybe five minutes before whatever's inside decides how to respond to our presence." The rhythmic pulsing intensified again, and Seraphine had to resist the urge to simply run away from the tower's hungry magic.
Jeane descended with practiced silence, boots finding familiar handholds despite the encroaching darkness. She emerged onto solid ground just as Seraphine finished her warning. The wizard's face was pale even in the fading light—when a scholar of arcane lore looked that terrified, you knew things were bad.
"I mapped the perimeter wards," Jeane reported immediately, voice low and urgent. "They're not defensive at all—they're feeding on something inside. Each pulse draws more power from whatever's chained up there." She gestured toward the tower, where the upper window remained dark save for that single watching shadow.
"Whatever it is, it's not human," Jeane continued, pulling her mace free and checking its edge reflexively. "The magic tastes wrong—old, powerful, and utterly corrupt. The wards aren't barriers; they're like... veins carrying its power outward." She met Seraphine's gaze directly. "We need to decide fast. If we push in now while it's still chained, maybe we can exploit whatever's binding it before it breaks free. But if we back off and wait, the wards will just keep feeding until something gives."
The rhythmic pulse came again, stronger this time—something inside the tower shifted with a low groan of stone on stone. Both women tensed, hands moving instinctively toward weapons or spell components.
"Or," Jeane added grimly, "we could try to find another way in that doesn't involve pissing off whatever's already awake upstairs."
