Round 28

Phase: escalating

The tower's ward magic pulsed once, slowly, like a sleeping beast stirring. Then it stopped entirely. A heavy scraping sound came from above, followed by the slow passage of a shadow across the highest window. Something inside was definitely awake now.
Merrin felt the ground shift beneath her feet—a stone slab settling with a loud crack. She froze, eyes scanning the facade for any sign of movement or hidden entrances. The ward's pulse going still had been bad enough; this complete silence was far worse. Whatever was upstairs knew they were here now.
Varrika shifted her grip on her mace, muscles tense. "Halie! We've got trouble." She felt it too—the magic in the air changing, becoming something active and predatory. The shadow flickering across that window again sent a chill down her spine. The ground shifting nearby didn't help either—something was moving beneath them.
Jeane's wings beat sharply as she rose into the air, circling above the group at a safe distance from the tower walls. "The ward's rhythm shifts—I can feel it in the air now." Her crimson eyes narrowed as she scanned the structure. "Whatever's upstairs isn't just waking up, it's listening. We've got maybe two minutes before it decides whether we're trespassers worth investigating or just more meat for its wards." She descended slightly, voice urgent: "Halie! Drop everything else—ward spell, now! Merrin, Varrika—I need you marking every stone that shifts on that facade. If the pattern changes again, call out immediately. Seraphine, get ready to light off a signal flare if we're detected. We accelerate."
Halie dropped her heavy pack and gripped her silver holy symbol tightly, face set in concentration. "Everyone freeze. The wards are active—they're feeding something inside." Her skin crawled with the sensation of old magic twisting into something hungry. "We have maybe five minutes before whatever's upstairs decides we're dinner." She began tracing a complex gesture over the symbol, voice firm: "This spell needs quiet focus. Guard me in a circle, but don't move or speak until I'm done."
Seraphine felt it first—the ward's pulse stopping wasn't just a slowing now, it was a sudden and terrifying absence of sound. A heavy silence settled over the tower like a shroud, thick and oppressive. She could feel the change in the air before anyone spoke, her skin prickling with static electricity. Her eyes darted to Merrin, then to Halie, but her mind was already racing ahead, trying to map the new threat.
"By all the gods," she breathed, the words so faint they were barely more than a thought. "It's awake." The magic surrounding them wasn't just defensive anymore—it had become something actively predatory. And whatever was upstairs was now aware of their presence.
The ground shifted again beneath Merrin's feet, louder this time—a stone slab settling with an audible crack. She froze, eyes scanning the facade for any sign of movement or hidden entrances. The ward's pulse going still had been bad enough; this complete silence was far worse. Whatever was upstairs knew they were here now.
