Round 16 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

At The base of a crumbling stone tower, the shared situation sharpens into an immediate decision point. What is already in motion no longer supports waiting or circling. The next concrete move will determine how this scene changes.
I fly up high over the tower's roof, wings beating steadily despite exhaustion. The air thins but the wrongness intensifies—it tastes of old blood and broken magic, cloying sweet and sharp metallic. Below, the stone itself pulses with a sickly light that wasn't visible from ground level. This isn't simple warding. This is something actively feeding on... I don't know what. The structure itself? Buried souls? Something worse? Merrin's right—we need to map every inch before we go in there blind, but my gut says the longer we linger, the more attention we draw. The wards aren't just defenses—they're alarms. "We have maybe an hour before whatever's inside notices us snooping," I call down. "Merrin, I can see at least three pressure points from up here—places where the magic thickens unnaturally. Avoid those zones completely. Halie, your spell might disrupt them if you're not careful." I circle once more. "Seraphine, I'm seeing what looks like a back entrance on the east side—part of the foundation has crumbled away completely. It's exposed to the elements but it might be an older passage that bypasses some of these newer traps."
I don't mention how unstable it looks—that section of stone is barely holding and a wrong step could bring the whole thing down. But sometimes you take risks with bad odds because the alternative sucks harder. My wings ache from the strain as I descend slowly. "This feels like walking into an ambush," I admit to the group below, landing heavily on my feet. "But every minute we waste out here increases our chances of being found by whatever's inside. The wards are active predators—we're already in their territory." I unsling my crossbow and check the bolts, though my hands shake slightly with fatigue. "I say we move now, before whoever's running this place realizes we're here sniffing around. Fast, quiet, and get eyes on what's actually inside instead of guessing from the perimeter."
I can feel them. The wards are... alive. Hungry. Not for us exactly, but something inside this place they're guarding. (beat) Merrin, Varrika—you two map the ground level, mark any suspicious stones or gaps in the foundation. I'll cast Seraphine's detection spell wide around here, see what else is listening to us. Takes five minutes of quiet focus though. (leaning on my heavy mace like a staff)
Jeane, if you're flying over that roof, be sharp. Don't get too close to any visible wards—they might have optical triggers. And whatever you see up there... don't just report it. Tell me what you think it means. (sigh) We need more than eyes on this place. We need understanding. (whispering a prayer, start the detection spell's incantation)
I nod grimly at Varrika's assessment. She's right—these wards are wrong, and rushing in will only make things worse. I turn to Jeane, who's still hovering near the roof. "Hey, Jeane! Any way we can reach those upper levels without tripping any alarms? Maybe a hidden ledge or overgrown path?" I call up, cupping my hands around my mouth. While I wait for her response, I start gathering my tools—lockpicks, crowbar, the works. These old towers always have secrets, and if we're going to find a way in, it'll be through some shadowed passage or hidden door. But Varrika's words echo in my mind. Whatever is feeding these wards... it's not something we want to surprise. Better to be prepared than sorry. I glance over at Halie, still focused on her spell. "How's that detection going? Anything we should know about before we start poking around?"
My hands fidget with the tools as I wait for answers. The tower looms over us, pulsing with a sickly light. We're running out of time, but rushing in blind would be suicide. I just hope whatever's inside is worth the risk.
