Shadow of the Ancients / Run 018 / Main Story
Round 50 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

At The base of a crumbling stone tower, the pressure shifts from waiting to immediate risk. The ward answers the party's presence with a fresh pulse through the stone and no one can mistake it for safety. The nearest sign of danger is now Skeletons: Undead remnants of the tower's original defenders, now animated by dark magic to endlessly guard their ancient home.. Someone has to answer that change now.
I peer over the edge of the pit, my eyes straining against the gloom as I try to discern any movement below. The air here is thick with ancient dust and something else—an unnatural silence that feels heavy on my skin. Varrika's crossbow is at the ready beside me, her knuckles white around the grip. Her jaw is set in a tight line, every muscle tense as she scans the darkness for any sign of threat.
My mind races through potential spells, each one a fragile thread of hope in this oppressive labyrinth of stone and shadow. The runes on the walls have gone still since Jeane fell, their warning pulse silenced by some unknown force. It feels like a bad omen, a quiet before an even greater storm.
Merrin's voice cuts through the tension, a sharp command to stay alert as they work to light more torches. The flickering flames cast jumping shadows across the pit’s walls, revealing little except for the sheer depth of Jeane’s plight.
I call out again into the void, my voice echoing back at me mockingly. "Jeane! Can you hear us?" My heart hammers against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the suffocating quiet. She has to be alive down there. We cannot lose her now, not when we've come so far.
The heavy tread sounds again, louder this time, a slow, deliberate rhythm that seems to vibrate up through the soles of my boots. Whatever it is, it knows we’re here. It knows Jeane is trapped.
The floor panel I fell through must have triggered the ward's new focus—whatever controls these undead bastards now knows exactly where we are and what's happening. The runes stopped pulsing when I landed; something else is responding instead, something beneath me. Get that rope down here fast. Whatever fell with me into this pit isn't stone—I felt it shift just now, organically. Claws scraping against the wall opposite me. I am not panicking. This is assessment of a tactical situation and immediate response required. My head aches from the pressure change but my mind is clear—detecting magic failed due to oxygen deprivation, which means I need air more than spells right now. The mace is ready if something climbs up. Don't waste time with questions. Tell them what I need: rope and light, immediately. Whatever's down here with me is getting closer to the surface, and whatever stopped that ward from pulsing is not good news.
I crouch at the edge of the pit, peering into the darkness with my torch held high. "Jeane! Can you hear me?" My voice echoes off the ancient stone walls. No response. Just an eerie silence broken only by the creaking of old wood and the distant scratching of claws. I grip my crossbow tighter, ready to fire at any sign of movement. "Halie, Merrin - stay alert. There's something down there with Jeane." My words are gruff but filled with concern. "I'm going to lower a rope. You two keep watch for any skeletons or other surprises."
I start unraveling the coil of sturdy rope at my belt, my mind racing. This tower is ancient and filled with dark magic. Whatever has Jeane trapped down there, it's not going to be easy to reach her. But we've come this far. We won't leave anyone behind, not even in a pit of horrors. I take a deep breath and begin lowering the rope into the unknown depths, my heart pounding in my chest. "Hold on, Jeane. We're coming for you."
