The skeletal figure holding Halie's wrist tightens its grip, causing her to cry out in pain. The air is heavy with malevolent intent as the undead creature's eyes seem to burn with an otherworldly energy. Varrika's crossbow bolt narrowly misses the skeleton's skull, sending it stumbling back. She quickly readjusts her aim and fires another bolt, striking the skeleton in the shoulder. Halie, still grappled by the undead creature, struggles against its grip as the bones seem to shift and writhe like living shadows. The stone floor beneath them begins to shudder, and a low, ominous rumble echoes through the tower, growing louder with each passing moment. The ancient runes on the walls seem to be reacting to the commotion, their symbols glowing with an eerie, pulsing light.

The tinderbox slips from my trembling fingers once more. I curse under my breath, my heart pounding in my ears. The darkness presses in around me, suffocating. Somewhere above, Halie cries out in pain and fear. I picture her struggling against the skeletal grip, her holy symbol winking with holy light. My hands shake as I fumble for the tinderbox again. Come on, come on... I mutter a prayer to any god listening, begging for a spark, a flame, anything to pierce this oppressive darkness. A low moan echoes through the pit, raising the hairs on my neck. What was that? Jeane? Or something else down here with us? "Jeane?" I call out, my voice echoing off the damp stone walls. "You okay down there?"

Only silence answers. My stomach twists into knots. Where is she? What if she's hurt? Or worse... I take a steadying breath, trying to calm my racing thoughts. Panic won't help anyone. I need to keep a clear head if we're going to get out of this alive. Finally, the tinderbox catches. A small flame flickers to life in my cupped hands. I hold it up, squinting into the shadows. The pit walls loom around me, slick with moisture and crawling with strange, glowing runes. I shudder, memories of Jeane's panicked description fresh in my mind. Something's changed below me since then. Something big moved through this space recently—it had to be at least my size. Maybe bigger. I shudder, pushing away the terrifying possibilities. One problem at a time. I need to find a way up and out of here before whatever made those noises decides to investigate the racket we're making. Clutching my crossbow tightly, I start to pick my way across the pit floor, searching for any sign of Jeane or an escape route. The flame dances wildly in the darkness, casting eerie shadows on the walls. "Jeane!" I call again, my voice echoing off the stones. "Where are you? Answer me!"

Silence stretches back, broken only by the drip of water and the skitter of unseen things in the darkness. My heart hammers against my ribs as I force myself to keep moving forward, deeper into the pit and the unknown horrors that lurk within its depths. The air grows colder the further I venture into the abyss, my breath misting before me. The runes on the walls pulse with an otherworldly light, seeming to respond to my presence. What is this place? What dark magic fuels these ancient wards? And what chance do we have against such malevolent power? I shake my head, trying to dispel the morbid thoughts. Now's not the time for doubt. I have to trust in my skills, in the strength of my companions. I just pray to whatever gods might be listening that it will be enough. Because if what lies at the bottom of this pit is half as terrifying as what we've already faced, we're in more trouble than I ever could have imagined. I take another cautious step forward, crossbow at the ready, and plunge deeper into the darkness. Only time will tell if we make it out alive...or if we become just another victim of this accursed tower and its undead horrors.

I watch with a mix of horror and morbid fascination as the skeleton grapples with Halie. The creature's bones are cold in the dim light of the torches, yet an unnatural strength pulses through them. This isn't mere decay—there’s dark magic animating these remains.
The air grows thick, heavy with an ancient malevolence that makes my skin crawl. The stone floor beneath my boots seems to hum with a low, ominous vibration. My fingers tighten around the grip of my mace, the worn leather cool against my palm.
"Varrika!" I call out, my voice surprisingly steady despite the fear coiling in my gut. "Get that rope ready! We need to pull her back before—"
My words are cut short by a sudden boom that echoes up from the pit where Jeane fell. Dust motes swirl in the air, catching the flickering torchlight like tiny, angry stars. The sound was not just a collapse of rock—it was deliberate. A heavy tread. Something massive is stirring below.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

The stone floor beneath me shifted again, this time accompanied by a low groan from somewhere deeper below. The ward's pulse had faded entirely now—something had broken its rhythm completely. 'Merrin!' I shouted upwards, my voice echoing unnaturally in the confined space of the pit. 'I'm alive down here but trapped! Do you see an opening anywhere? A crack or a seam?'

My head was starting to ache from the pressure change when I'd fallen through. The air was thinning fast—I needed them to find me before oxygen depletion made spellcasting impossible. 'There's something moving under me,' I called out, forcing my voice steady despite the rising panic. 'Whatever made those sounds earlier is getting closer.'

I reached for my wand but hesitated—too little light down here, too much uncertainty about what might be approaching from below. Instead, I focused on maintaining my breathing and listening for any response or sound of rescue.
