A faint, eerie glow emanates from the hidden pit, casting an unsettling light on the stone walls. The wards' pulse slows to a mere trickle, and the air grows colder. Jeane's voice echoes back, "Varrika, Merrin! I need air soon or a way out!" Varrika crouches at the edge of the pit, crossbow aimed down into the darkness, her muscles tense with anticipation. A nearby skeleton, its bony fingers grasping the hilt of a rusted sword, stirs from its stationary pose, its empty eye sockets glowing with an unnatural hunger. The air is heavy with the scent of decay and something else – something wrong. The torches' flames flicker wildly, casting dancing shadows on the walls as the party holds its collective breath, waiting for Varrika's next move.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I descend the stairs into the pit's shadow with mace raised, silver holy symbol held out. The wards' pulse is slowing now—intentionally, deliberately. This isn't decaying magic; it's waiting. Jeane? Can you hear me? Keep talking. We're coming down.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's heart pounds in her chest as she peers over the edge of the pit, her small form silhouetted against the dim torchlight. "Varrika! I hear you," she calls down, her voice echoing off the cold stone walls. "But we've got a problem. The wards are pulsing slower now, deliberate somehow. Waiting." She fumbles with the tinderbox, trying to keep the dwindling flame alive. "I need air soon or a way out. Whatever made that scraping sound has stopped moving. Could be anything from Skeletons to structural collapse waiting to happen."

Halie shifts closer to Merrin, her mace raised and holy symbol clutched tight. "We're coming for you, Jeane," she calls down, her voice steady despite the fear in her eyes. "Stay sharp up there, Merrin. We don't know what else might be lurking in the shadows."

Merrin nods, her gaze darting between the darkness below and the pulsing wards at their feet. She tightens her grip on her crossbow, fingers itching to loose a bolt into the unknown. "You got it," she mutters, more to herself than to Halie. "But we better make this quick. That torch won't last forever, and I've got a bad feeling about what happens when it goes out..."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

The air in the tower is heavy with the scent of old stone and something else—something rotten and old that turns my stomach. I crouch at the edge of the hidden pit, my eyes straining to penetrate the thick darkness below. The wards etched into the floor pulse with an unsettling rhythm, feeding on some unseen energy. "Jeane?" My voice echoes back to me, a desperate question in the silent gloom. Varrika shifts her weight beside me, her muscles tensing as she scans the shadows. She lowers her crossbow slightly, her finger hovering over the trigger. Merrin fumbles with the tinderbox, trying to ignite another flare to cast some light into the abyss.
"The torch is almost out,"
I murmur, my gaze fixed on the flickering flame at the bottom of the pit. It's a tiny pinprick of life in this tomb of a place. "Whatever's down there... it knows we're here."
Varrika grunts in agreement, her jaw set tight with determination. She raises her crossbow again, aiming it into the pit like she expects something to burst from the shadows at any moment. "Stay sharp," she says to Merrin, her voice a low growl in the oppressive quiet.*
