Round 39 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

At The base of a crumbling stone tower, the pressure shifts from waiting to immediate risk. The ward answers the party's presence with a fresh pulse through the stone and no one can mistake it for safety. The nearest sign of danger is now Skeletons: Undead remnants of the tower's original defenders, now animated by dark magic to endlessly guard their ancient home.. Someone has to answer that change now.
I hear scraping below. Not rock settling. Something moving in the dark where I fell through the floor. The wards pulse again—lazy, hungry. My wings ache to spread, but in this confined space, magic is a double-edged sword that could collapse what's left of this ceiling or illuminate whatever's making that sound down here. Torch guttering low. Need air. Need out. The scraping stops. It heard me speak. Don't know if that makes it smarter or just more curious. Darkness feels sentient now, pressing against my skin like oil. Merrin? Varrika? Can you hear me up there?
I can hear something moving down there now, more clearly since Jeane called out. The wards are definitely active—pulsing like a heartbeat—but slower now, waiting. This tower wants something. I don't think it's just an empty shell anymore. Varrika, keep that crossbow aimed at the pit opening. Merrin, stay put where you can see everything around us both up and down. Jeane, answer me—what exactly did you hear moving? Was it bones scraping stone or... something else? We need to know what we're dealing with before I come down there with my shield and mace ready. (Note: I'm not about to rush blindly into a cursed pit because someone got themselves trapped. We'll do this methodically, with everyone aware of their role, even if it means waiting until we have more information. This isn't a game—this is life or death, especially for Jeane.)
The scraping sound stops abruptly at Merrin's call. She holds her breath, crossbow aimed at the pit's edge, straining to hear any further movement from Jeane or whatever lurked below. Varrika shifts beside her, the dwarf's grip tightening on her own weapon. "Something's down there alright," she mutters. "And it don't like us much."
Merrin nods grimly. The tower's magic feels alive, hungry, and she doesn't know if they're the prey or the offering. The runes etched into the stone floor pulse with an unsettling rhythm, feeding on some unseen energy. "We need to get Jeane out of there," Merrin whispers urgently to Varrika. "But if we start throwing torches and firing crossbows, we'll have a whole mess of skeletons to deal with."
Varrika grunts in agreement, eyes scanning the shadowed ceiling warily. "Aye. We need to be smart about this. Careful-like."
Merrin swallows hard, her mouth suddenly dry. She can feel the weight of their mission settling on her shoulders like a physical burden. They're so close to their goal, to the Time-Splitting Sword and the power it promises. But at what cost? She takes a deep breath, forcing her racing thoughts to slow. One step at a time. First, they get Jeane out safely. Then they deal with whatever horrors the tower has in store. "Alright," she says softly, more to herself than to Varrika. "Let's see if we can't find a way to reach her without bringing the whole damn tower down on our heads."
Varikka nods grimly, keeping her crossbow trained on the pit's edge as Merrin begins to cautiously circle the hidden chamber, searching for any sign of a path or passage that might lead them to their fallen comrade.
